Keystone Defeats Scranton 11-4 for Fifth Straight Victory

Giants build 7-0 lead over first three innings to take control of non-conference game

La Plume, PA – Keystone College built a 7-0 lead over the first three innings of Wednesday afternoon's non-conference baseball game against the University of Scranton and cruised to an 11-4 victory to notch their fifth consecutive win.  The Giants, currently ranked 15th in the nation, improve to 24-7 on the season while the Royals drop to 18-13.

Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) led off the bottom of the first inning with a double to right field and was sacrificed to third by Austin Straub (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius)Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) followed with an RBI double to left center to score Catherina and came home on a single by Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School).  Ramirez made it a 3-0 game after scoring from second on a Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) base hit.

Scranton put a pair of runners on with nobody out in the top of the second inning, but Keystone starter James Dunning (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) got a key, 4-6-3 double play followed by a flyout to escape the early trouble.

Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) was hit by a pitch to lead off the home second and Catherina followed with an infield single and both runners moved into scoring position with a double steal before scoring on a Straub double down the left field line to make it a 5-0 game and chasing Scranton starter Luke Sheehan after just an inning of work.

Catherina ripped a two-out, two-run double to deep center in the third inning as the Giants extended their advantage to 7-0 with McLaughlin and Garcia scoring on the play.

Keystone extended their lead to eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Chris Muniz (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) led off the inning with single to left before coming around to score on a wild pitch and Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) also scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning and Domenick Montanaro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) hit a double to right center to bring home Miquel Castano (Miami, FL/Miami Springs), pushing the host's lead to 10-0.

The Royals got on the board in the top of the eighth inning when Justin Klingman doubled to right center to bring home Anthony Duchnowski and Ross Danzig followed with a two-run double to the gap in right center.  Danzig made it a 10-4 game by scoring on an RBI single by Michael Gaeta.

Jhonattan Santelises (Lynn, MA/Lynn English ) scored the Giants' 11th run of the game on an RBI groundout by Castano in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Dunning earned his first win of the season on the mound after pitching five strong for Keystone and allowing just two hits and walking one while striking out four batters.  Felix Lopez (Brooklyn, NY/Grand Street Campus) went 2.2 innings on the hill in relief and surrendered the Royals four runs on six hits while fanning a pair of batters.  Robert Minaya (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) closed out the game for Keystone, tossing the final 1.1 innings and recorded a rare, four-strikeout ninth inning, as the first strikeout victim reached on a dropped third strike before Minaya recorded the final three out of the game by the K.

Catherina led the Giants offense with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored while Straub also drove in a pair of runs.  Ramirez and Guerrero had two hits apiece as well for the Keystone in the win.

Sheehan was charged with the loss for Scranton as the Royals used seven different pitchers in the game, allowing 15 Keystone hits, four walks, and collecting five strikeouts as a group.

Danzig went 2-3 with two RBIs after entering the game as a pinch hitter to lead Scranton, who also got a pair of hits from Gaeta in the loss.

Keystone returns to action on Friday afternoon when they host Gwynedd-Mercy in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Christy Mathewson Field in the first game of a key, three-game series between the two teams.  The Giants and Griffins will close out their regular season series with a doubleheader on Saturday in Gwynedd Valley, PA.
