Keystone Deals Neumann First CSAC Defeat, 8-5

Giants pound out 16 hits in conference win

La Plume, PA – Keystone College, currently ranked 12th in the country, pounded out 16 hits on their way to an 8-5 victory over Neumann University in Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at Christy Mathewson Field.  Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) went 4-5 at the plate to lead the Giants, who got two RBIs apiece from Gabriel Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Perkiomen School) and Jose Garcia (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) and improved to 17-6 on the season and 6-1 in league play.

Neumann, now 14-5 on the year and 4-1 in the CSAC, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after putting runners on second and third with one out before Tyler Drinkard hit a two-run single down the left field line.

Keystone tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Rick McLaughlin (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garcia.  McLaughlin took third on a wild pitch and score on a Domenick Montanaro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) sacrifice fly.  Kevin Catherina (Ridgefield, NJ/St. Mary (Rutherford)) followed with a base hit, stole second, and tied the game by scoring on a RBI single by Ramirez.

The Knights put a pair of runners on with nobody out in the fourth inning, but Giants' starter Mike Pembleton (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Township) got big, 4-6-3 double play followed by a groundout to escape the threat.

Keystone took their first lead of the game in the home half of the fourth.  Lymbel Guerrero (Lynn, MA/Lynn Classical) led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Knights.  Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) sacrificed Guerrero to third with a bunt and Garcia brought Guerrero home with a two-out single to left field.

The Giants loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth inning on three straight singles and Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace) brought Catherina home with another single.  Guerrero then hit a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Ramirez to push the host's lead to 5-2.

Neumann put runners on the corners with no one out in the visitor's sixth and Bill Pace scored on a Matt Sheneman sacrifice fly to make it a 5-3 game, but Keystone got the run back in the home half of the inning when Ramirez hit a two-out double down the right field line that scored Catherina from first.

The Knights put their first two runners on in the top of the seventh and after the Giants turned a double play, Bobby McCormick blooped a single over shortstop that scored Joey Armata from third to make it a 6-4 game, but that was all relief pitcher Adam Sosnowski (Dickson City, PA/Mid-Valley) would allow in the inning.

Bzozowski was hit by a pitch to star the home seventh and was pinch run for by Chris Muniz (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) who would steal second and third before scoring on Garcia's second two-out RBI single of the game.

Neumann made it a 7-5 game by taking advantage of a throwing error by the Giants in the top of the eighth inning, but Keystone again responded as pinch hitter Tyler Gurman (Bronx, NY/Lehman) hit a single to left field that scored Ramirez from third to make the score 8-5 in favor of the Giants.

Adam Krebs (Commack, NY/Commack) worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his third save of the season and got a great defensive play from Garcia at second as the junior dove to his right to cut out a potential base hit and gunned out the runner at first.

Pembleton improved to 4-0 on the season after going six innings on the mound and allowing six hits while striking out four.  Sosnowski allowed one hit and one run in the seventh inning and Justin Martinez (Bronx, NY/Clifton) also yielded a hit and a run in the eighth inning before handing the ball off to Krebs.

Molina went 4-5 with four singles while Ramirez finished the day 3-4 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Garcia finished 2-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs, Guerrero added two hits and Catherina scored three runs to lead the Giants' offense.

Neumann starter Matt Spillman (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing six runs in six innings of work to go along with three strikeouts.  Ted Fletcher allowed two runs and two hits in an inning of work while Kevin Joo pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Knights, who were paced offensively by Drinkard who finished the afternoon 4-4 at the plate with two RBIs.

Keystone will travel to Aston, PA on Saturday to take on Neumann in a key CSAC doubleheader scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
