Mighty Macs Rally for 3-2 Overtime Victory Over Giants

Dempster and Sotiropoulos score goals for Keystone; Denmon and Hawkins combine for 18 saves

La Plume, PA – Visiting Immaculata University overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit with three unanswered goals including the game-winner 5:28 into overtime to edge Keystone College, 3-2, in Colonial States Athletic Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.  The Mighty Macs boost their record to 6-8 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Giants, who got goals from Rebecca Dempster (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) and Briana Sotiropoulos (Waterford, CT/Waterford), slide to 2-12 on the fall and 1-3 in the CSAC.

Keystone peppered Immaculata goalkeeper Sarah Pasternak with five shots on goal over the opening eight and a half minutes of Saturday afternoon's contest, but the sophomore stopped all five attempts to keep the game scoreless.  The Giants would finally break through with exactly 20 minutes remaining in the first half when Dempster took a pass from Kaelyn Englert (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton) following a penalty corner, turned, a rifled home a shot from the center of the circle for her second goal of the season to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

At the other end, Amy Denmon (Beaumont, PA/Lake-Lehman) made a pair of nice saves off a scramble in front of the Keystone cage with seven minute left in the opening half to keep the Giants in front.  Keystone took advantage of the strong play by their goaltender at the other end by cashing in on a fast break at the other end as Sotiropoulos scored the first goal of her collegiate career with Breanna Paulson (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) assisting on the tally.

The Giants would enjoy the 2-0 lead at halftime after outshooting the Mighty Macs by an 11-9 margin in the opening 35 minutes of play.

Immaculata cut their deficit in half just 47 seconds into the second half when Megan Donegan scored from seven yards out after taking a feed from Nicole Dominick.  The Mighty Macs, who held a 13-4 advantage in shots in the second half, knotted the game at 2-2 with 9:20 left in regulation when Brooke Robinson scored off of a Danielle Lopez assist following a penalty corner.

In overtime, Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) stopped the first three shots by Immaculata before Lindsay Cras picked up a rebound a fired home the game-winner 5:28 into the first sudden death extra period.

Pasternak finished the game with 10 saves to pick up the win for Immaculata, who held a 26-15 advantage in shots for the game while also holding a 17-8 edge in penalty corners.

Denmon and Hawkins combined to record 18 saves for the Giants, with Denmon making seven stops over the first 44:44 in the host's cage while Hawkins turned aside 11 shots in the final 30:44.

Keystone will return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Richard Stockton for their final non-conference game of the regular season.  Start time between the Giants and Ospreys is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Pomona, New Jersey.
