Gwynedd Valley, PA – Keystone College's volleyball team rebounded from a three-set defeat to Arcadia University in the opening match of Saturday's tri-match at Gwynedd Mercy University to defeat the host Griffins in four sets in the nightcap to earn a split on the day. The Giants see their record shift to 9-11 overall this fall while their victory over the Griffins boosts their Colonial States Athletic Conference mark to 3-3.
In Saturday's opener, Arcadia (12-5) won the first set 25-18 before claiming the second set, 25-16. The Knights then closed out the match with a 25-14 victory in the third frame.
Makenna Micklus led Arcadia with 10 kills while Natalie Cadmus, Taylor Hoover, and Colleen Stengel added six kills apiece. Alexia Bell paced the Knights with a match-high 23 assists while Sami Evans led the squad with nine digs.
Ciera Scepaniak (Vestal, NY/Vestal) led the Giants with a double-double on 10 kills which tied for a match-high while leading all players with 14 digs in the loss.
Shatia Silas (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) added six kills for Keystone while
Carol Mosier (Hunlock Creek, PA/Lake-Lehman) dished out a team-leading 17 assists.
Dana Carey (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) contributed 12 digs against the Knights while
Nicki Yeager (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) served up a pair of aces.
Arcadia hit .245 for the match compared to Keystone's .022 hitting percentage in the opener.
Keystone got back on track in Saturday's nightcap with a key, 3-1 conference win over Gwynedd Mercy (6-18, 1-5 CSAC). The Giants won the opening set 25-17 before the Griffins leveled the match with a 25-22 win in game two. Keystone responded with a wins of 25-19 and 25-17 to seal the victory.
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) led all players with 19 kills and 22 digs to record her ninth double-double of the season while Scepaniak also finished with a double-double – her second of the day and third of the year – on 13 kills and 15 digs. Silas contributed eight kills against the Griffins.
Mosier led all players with a season-high 42 assists to go along with 10 digs for her first double-double of the year. Carey contributed 21 digs and
Anya Cerniglia (Great Meadows, NJ/Hackettstown) added two aces in the victory.
Lauren Tressel led Gwynedd Mercy with eight kills and 21 digs while Lauren Martin led the Griffins with 23 assists. Laura Kirk (18), Caroline Bisch (15), and Martin (10) all contributed double-digit digs for the hosts in the loss.
The Giants posted a .160 hitting percentage in the win compared to Gwynedd Mercy's mark of .033 in the nightcap.
Keystone will head back down the turnpike on Wednesday for a CSAC match at Cabrini College. First serve is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
