Allentown, PA – Keystone College scored seven goals in the first 21:42 of the second half Saturday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference field hockey game at Cedar Crest College to pull away for an 8-0 victory.
Diandra Sherman (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) scored three goals and assisted on two others while
Breanna Paulson (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) added three goals and an assist as the Giants lift their record to 2-10 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The hat-tricks for Sherman and Paulson mark just the fifth and sixth times that a Keystone player has scored at least three goals in one game.
Despite holding a 6-2 advantage in shots in the first half, Keystone was only able to take a 1-0 lead into halftime as Sherman opened the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 28
th minute of play.
Paulson opened the floodgates just 4:51 into the second half though by finding the back of the cage after taking a pass from
Alissa Nugent (Chestertown, MD/Kent County). The sophomore pushed the Giants' lead to 3-0 just over three minutes later by scoring off a feed from Sherman. Nearly three minutes later,
Gabby Gerschwiler (Leonardtown, MD/Leonardtown) got into the act by knocking home a shot with
Rebecca Dempster (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) assisting on the tally.
Paulson completed her hat-trick in the 50
th minute with an unassisted marker to make it a 5-0 game before setting up Keystone's next goal which was scored by Sherman in the 55
th minute. Shernman then assisted on
Alissa Nugent (Chestertown, MD/Kent County)'s 56
th minute tally before Sherman capping the scoring with her third goal of the day in the 57
th minute.
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) made seven saves to pick up her first collegiate shutout win in goal for Keystone, who held a commanding, 21-8 advantage in shots for the game while earning 15 penalty corners for the game compared to nine for Cedar Crest (0-8, 0-2 CSAC).
Andi Dargis went the distance in goal for the Falcons and suffered the loss despite making nine saves on the afternoon.
Keystone will host Wilkes University on Wednesday afternoon in the Giants' Play 4 the Cure game. The non-conference game against the Colonels is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. on Keystone's turf field.
