La Plume, PA –
Alex Buchholz (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood),
Eddy Enowbi (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook), and
Brandyn Favero (Grimsby, Ontario/Blessed Trinity Catholic) scored a goal apiece to lead Keystone College to a 3-2 victory over visiting Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon as the Giants picked up their first Colonial States Athletic Conference men's soccer win of the fall. Keystone lifts their record to 7-4 overall this season and 1-2 in the CSAC while the Griffins slide to 2-9 (0-2 CSAC).
Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:55 into Saturday's game when Kyle Ditsche escaped free in the Keystone penalty area to redirect home a restart curled in the center of the area by Chris Black. The Griffins nearly doubled their lead in the 10
th minute, but Giants' goalkeeper
Anthony Cutillo (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) boldly came off his line to smother a shot off a Gwynedd Mercy forward.
After a slow start, Keystone stepped up the offensive pressure and was rewarded with the equalizing goal in the 17
th minute as Buchholz scored his third goal of the season, and his second in the last three games, but knocking home a rebound off a shot by Enowbi that was saved, but not corralled, by Griffins' netminder Matt Chilcote.
After
Jacob Jess (Douglas, MA/Douglas) and Massimo Leahy both had great chances from close range denied by Chilcote, Keystone took a 2-1 lead with 4:12 remaining in the first half when Enowbi took a short pass from
Adam Kashuba (Dickson City, PA/Summit Christian Academy) and slipped a shot past Chilcote for his 11
th goal of the season. The Giants would hold the one-goal advantage at the halftime break after doubling up Gwynedd Mercy in shots in the opening 45 minutes of play, 10-5, while generating seven corner kicks to just a pair of the visitors.
Keystone extended their lead to 3-1 in the 51
st minute Favero netted the first goal of his collegiate career by rifling home a shot from 19 yards out on a well-executed set piece with
Abreham Kittel (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson) and
Julio Pertuz (Caracas, Venezuela/EU Noestra Senora de las Mercedes) both picking up assists on the Giants' third goal of the game.
Gwynedd Mercy responded in the 57
th minute as Rich Mychack ran onto a thru-ball from Jeff Henkel and finished off the breakaway opportunity to narrow their deficit to 3-2. Despite several good chances at both ends of the field including a header by Keystone's
Louis Rizo (Freehold, NJ/Freehold ) that hit the post, Mychack's goal marked the final time either team was able to find the back of the net as the Giants held on for the win.
Keystone had the better of the play statistically as the hosts held a 21-8 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Cutillo finished the game with four saves to earn the win in goal while improving his record to 4-3 on the season.
Chilcote kept the Griffins within striking distance throughout the game by making nine saves in the loss.
Keystone returns to action next Saturday with a Colonial States Athletic Conference game at Cairn University. Opening kickoff between the Giants and Highlanders is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.
