Immaculata, PA – Immaculata University secured the fifth seed in the upcoming Colonial States Athletic Conference volleyball playoffs with a three-set victory over visiting Keystone College on Saturday afternoon. The Mighty Macs will take a 17-8 overall record into the conference tournament while finishing with a 7-4 mark in league play. The Giants end their 2014 campaign with an 11-18 record while going 4-7 in the CSAC.
Immaculata won Saturday's first set 25-21 before taking a 2-0 advantage with a 25-13 victory in the second game. Keystone rebounded to battle the Mighty Macs to the limit in the third set and held set point on three different occasions, but Immaculata emerged with a 29-27 win in the set to claim the match.
Gabrielle Guerrera led a balanced attack for the Mighty Macs with nine kills while Arden Vizzard added eight kills for the hosts. Stephanie Johler and Jamie Rombach had seven kills apiece while Maranda Jones (17) and Brittany Thompson (14) paced Immaculata in the assist column.
Emily Swank led a trio of Mighty Macs in double-figures for digs with 17 on the afternoon while Molly Truitt (14) and Thompson (10) also reaching at least 10 digs.
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) paced Keystone with her 14
th double-double of the season on a match-high 19 kills to go along with 12 digs while tying for a match-high with two service aces in the match. Zuchowski, who posted double-digit kills in 26 of the 28 matches in which she played this fall, finishes her sophomore year with a school record 461 kills on the season while extending her career kills record to 817.
Ciera Scepaniak (Vestal, NY/Vestal) added eight kills and nine digs in the loss while
Carol Mosier (Hunlock Creek, PA/Lake-Lehman) led all players with 28 assists in the contest.
Dana Carey (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) picked up a match-best 20 digs for the Giants.
Zuchowski and
Jackie Nat (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Coughlin) tied for the match lead with three total blocks apiece while
Shatia Silas (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) added a pair of blocks.
Immaculata held a slim, 58-54 advantage in digs for the match while posting a .115 hitting percentage in the win. The Giants hit .077 on the day in the loss.
Saturday's match marked the final contest in a Keystone uniform for Nat, the lone senior on the Giants roster. Nat was a valuable contributed to the squad for the past three seasons and finishes her career fourth all-time in school history in career blocks.
