Union, NJ – Trailing 41-30 early in the second half of Saturday afternoon's season-opening women's basketball game at the Kean University Tip-Off Classic, Farmingdale State University would go on to outscore Keystone College 52-31 the rest of the of way to score an 82-72 victory over the Giants. The Rams (1-0) will take on Kean in Sunday's championship game at 3:00 p.m.
Ashley Evans (Wooster, OH/Wooster) scored a career-high 32 points to lead all players in Saturday's game for the Giants (0-1), who will play in Sunday's consolation game starting at 1:00 p.m. against Simmons College, who dropped a 90-49 decision to Kean in Saturday's nightcap.
Trailing 15-13 with 11:05 remaining in the first half, Keystone went on a 10-2 run over the next 3:20, with Evans netting all 10 points for the Giants in the burst, to give Keystone a 23-17 advantage. Farmingdale State was able to narrow their deficit to a single point with just over six minutes left on the clock, but the Giants outscored the Rams 13-6 the rest of the way to hold a 38-30 lead at halftime.
Alyssa Cuomo (Odessa, DE/Hodgson Vo-tech) hit a three-pointer to open the second half to give Keystone their largest lead of the game at 11 points, but Farmingdale State used a 21-5 surge to reclaim a 51-46 advantage with 13:37 left in regulation. Another trey from Cuomo at the 12:13 mark brought the game back level at 53-apiece, but the Rams scored the game's next eight points to seize a 61-53 lead with 9:31 remaining.
Evans again spearheaded a run for Keystone, this time hitting back-to-back shots from downtown before converting a layup to knot the game back up with at the 7:41 mark, but a 10-2 burst by Farmingdale State gave them a 71-63 edge with 4:52 left. Back-to-back three-pointers from Evans brought the Giants back to within two points with 4:14 remaining, but it was as close as Keystone was able to come as the Rams pulled away with the victory.
Camille Romero led four players in double-figures for Farmingdale State with 24 points while Nicole Lanteri (18 points, 15 rebounds) and Andrew Desvignes (13 points, 10 rebounds) contributed double-doubles for the Rams. Marlaina Sherman also reached double-digits with 12 points while Desvignes tied for a game-high with five assists. Romero led all layers with four steals on the afternoon.
After shooting just 26.4 percent from the floor in the opening half, Farmingdale State shot at a 48.5 percent clip in the second half to hit on 34.9 percent of their shots for the game. The Rams went 4-22 (18.2 percent) from the charity stripe and 18-28 (64.3 percent) from the charity stripe in the game.
Evans' game-high 32 points came on an 11-22 performance from the floor including a 7-14 effort from three-point range. Cuomo added 11 points,
Cierra Hensley (Frederick, MD/Frederick) netted eight points in her collegiate debut for the Giants, and
Chelsey Hropovich (Seward, PA/Ligonier Valley) also contributed eight points in the contest.
Jerica Rode (Lords Valley, PA/Wallenpaupack) paced Keystone on the glass with nine rebounds while blocking a game-high four shots in the loss. Evans and Hensley snagged six boards apiece while
Jazmyn Robinson (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern) tied for a game-high with five assists to go along with a pair of steals.
Keystone shot 42.4 percent from the field for the game including a 41.7 percent effort from beyond the arc. The Giants were solid at the free throw line, connecting on 12 of 15 free throw attempts (80.0 percent).
Farmingdale State held a 54-41advantage in rebound for the game while turning the ball over just 11 times compared to 24 giveaways by Keystone.
