Reading, PA – Leading by a single point with 3:45 left in regulation, Albright College scored eight-straight points take control of Saturday afternoon's non-conference women's basketball game against Keystone College on their way to an 82-72 victory. The Lions, who got a game-high 29 points from Kelecia Harris, improve to 2-1 on the season while the Giants fall to 2-2 on the young season.
Alyssa Cuomo (Odessa, DE/Hodgson Vo-tech) led Keystone with 22 points while
Cierra Hensley (Frederick, MD/Frederick) recorded the first double-double of her collegiate career on 10 points while tying for a game-high with 12 rebounds.
Hensley gave Keystone an 11-9 lead on a layup with 13:13 remaining in the first half of Saturday's contest before Albright countered with the game's next eight points to hold a 17-11 advantage midway through the opening period. The hosts pushed their lead to 10 points with 4:40 left in the period before the Giants used a and 11-1 run to knot the score up at 32-32 with 40 seconds showing on the clock as
Shatia Silas (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) connected on the front end of a pair of free throws.
The Lions, who shot 43.8 percent in the first half, would take a 35-32 advantage into the halftime break after making three of four free throw attempts in the final eight seconds of the stanza. Albright was paced by Emily O'Donnell's 11 points in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Cuomo led all players with 12 points in the first half while
Samantha Donahue (Taylor, PA/Riverside) chipped in seven points in for Keystone, who connected on 34.6 percent from the floor in period.
Coming out of the intermission, Albright stretched their lead to 39-32 in the opening 1:52 of play before Cuomo scored the next seven points of the game to bring Keystone back level at 39-apiece with 16:52 remaining in regulation. The Lions countered with next seven points of the contest, but the Giants against battled back to forge a 53-53 tie with 11:11 left on a lay-in by
Jazmyn Robinson (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern).
Chelsey Hropovich (Seward, PA/Ligonier Valley) gave the visitors their first lead of the game with 6:29 left in the second half with a jump shot, but Albright went back to the point 40 seconds later. A field goal from Hensley with 3:45 remaining cut Keystone's deficit to 67-66, but the Lions outscored the Giants 15-6 the rest of the way to pull away with their second victory of the season.
Harris finished with a double-double on 29 points and 12 rebounds to lead Albright, who got 15 points from O'Connell and 13 points from Jessica Venturelli. The Lions shot 44.3 percent from the field for the game while going 1-8 from three-point range and 19-27 (70.4) percent from the free throw line. The hosts also held a 45-37 advantage in rebounding for the game.
Cuomo's team-high 22 points came on an 8-12 shooting performance including a 3-6 effort from beyond the arc. Robinson added 12 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high six assists for Keystone while
Ashley Evans (Wooster, OH/Wooster) contributed 11 points while leading all players with four steals. Hensley was the fourth player in double-figures for the Giants with 10 points while the freshman's 12 boards tied for the game-high.
The visitors hit on 40.4 percent of their field goal attempts in the contest while shooting 33.3 percent (4-12) from three-point land and 66.7 percent (22-33) from the line.
Keystone will play their home opener on Sunday afternoon against Utica College in a non-conference tilt scheduled to tipoff at 2:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume.
