Centenary Trips Up Men’s Basketball, 84-71

Dargan nets a season-high 23 points in loss to Cyclones

La Plume, PA – Miles Dargan (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) scored a season-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough as Centenary College denied Keystone College's men's basketball team's bid at their first win of the season with an 84-71 victory over the Giants in Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night in the Gambal Athletic Center.  Five different players reached double-figures for the Cyclones, who leveled their record at 3-3 on the season while moving to 2-0 on the year.

Centenary took an early six-point lead in Wednesday evening's contest before Keystone (0-5, 0-2 CSAC) stormed back to take an 18-17 edge at the 12:11 mark of the first half on a layup by Darien Wingate (Brooklyn, NY/Christiana).  The Cyclones countered with a  three pointer to go back to the point, but Keystone was able to claim a 26-24 edge with 8:40 remaining in the period when James Cooper (Effort, PA/Pius X) converted a pair of free throws.

The visitors countered by scoring the next nine points of the game to build a 33-26 advantage.  Keystone drew back to within a single point when Dargan converted a rare, four-point play with 11 seconds remaining in the first half, but Andy Charles hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give Centenary a 40-36 lead at halftime.

Charles paced the Cyclones with 13 points in the opening 20 minutes of play while Myles McLeod netted 10 first half points for the visitors, who shot 53.6 percent from the field including a hot, 7-11 effort from three-point range.

Dargan netted 16 points in the first half to lead Keystone while Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) netted 11 points in the period.  Wingate grabbed a team-best four rebounds for the Giants, who connected on 39.3 percent of their field goal attempts in the half while going 42.9 percent from downtown.

Centenary opened the second half with a pair of field goals before Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) followed up a Dargan trey with a lay-in to bring Keystone to within three at 44-41.  The Cyclones answered with a 13-2 burst to claim a 57-43 advantage with 15:55 left in regulation.

Trailing 63-50 with just over 11 minutes left to play, the Giants embarked on a 12-2 run of their own to cut their deficit to three points, 65-62, with 7:42 left on the clock.  Centenary again had a response though, rattling off eight straight points to build an 11-point advantage with 5:39 remaining, and the Giants were unable to cut their deficit into single digits the rest of the way.

Charles led Centenary with 17 points and seven rebounds while Zachary Duymich and Rashaan Spencer netted 16 points apiece.  McLeod finished the contest with 14 points while Josh Case added 12 points for the Cyclones, who finished the game shooting 56.4 percent from the field, 59.1 percent from three-point range, and 75.0 percent from the free throw line.
Duymich paced the Cyclones with five assists and three steals and the visitors claimed a narrow, 36-30 advantage in rebounds for the game.

Dargan's season-best 23 points came on a 7-13 effort from the field including six three-pointers.  Candemeres finished the evening with 12 points while Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) contributed nine points in the loss for the Giants, who shot 40.7 percent from the floor, 37.1 percent from downtown, and 62.5 percent from the stripe.

Wingate and Rashaud Kelley (Sharon, PA/Paul Laurence Dunbar) tied for the team-lead with five rebounds apiece while Wingate led all players with three blocks.  Longmire, Candemeres, and Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) each had three assists in the loss while Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) led the squad with three steals.

Keystone returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a CSAC tilt at Neumann University that is scheduled to tipoff at 1:00 p.m. in Aston, Pennsylvania.
