La Plume, PA – Visiting Cabrini College spoiled Keystone College's home opening doubleheader on Wednesday, defeating the Giants in both games of the Colonial States Athletic Conference twin bill. The Cavaliers, who won game one 7-3 before pulling away for a 13-5 victory in the second game, improve to 6-9 on the season and 5-2 in conference play while the Giants, who got four hits apiece on the day from
Karissa Worobey (Scranton, PA/Scranton),
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, PA/Lake-Lehman), and
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, PA/Pittston Area), slip to 3-9 overall while remaining winless in four CSAC contests.
In Wednesday's opener, Cabrini jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double to center before Becca Miles gave the Cavaliers a 5-0 advantage with a grand slam to straightaway center in the visitor's half of the third inning.
Cabrini staring pitcher Taylor Gallagher helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning to make it a 6-0 contest in favor of the visitors before Keystone got a pair of runs back in the bottom half of the inning when Worobey and
Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Lourdes Regional) came on a Cabrini fielding error in the outfield on a ball hit by
Kaitlyn Sawicki (Factoryville, PA/Lackawanna Trail).
The Giants cut their deficit to 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when
Stephanie Puckett (Taylor, PA/Riverside) singled home Stacey, but Cabrini was able to strand two runners on base to enter the seventh with a three-run advantage. Gallagher hit another sacrifice fly to make it a 7-3 game before pitching a scoreless bottom half of the seventh to close out the victory on the mound.
Gallaher improved to 4-4 on the year with the complete game win while allowing three runs on nine hits while driving in two runs at the plate.
Kaitlyn Cooper was 4-4 with a pair of runs scored while Miles' four RBIs powered Cabrini offensively to the game one victory.
Worobey and Stacey had two hits apiece to lead Keystone in the loss while Worobey suffered the loss on the mound after being charged with seven runs while fanning five batters on the day.
Sara Schraden (Allentown, PA/William Allen) came on in relief and retired the final three outs in order for the Giants.
In the nightcap, Cabrini jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first at-bats on a two-run double by Miles before pushing their lead to three runs on an RBI single in the visitor's second.
In the bottom of the third inning, Keystone loaded the bases with one out and Long delivered a single to left-center that scored
Jackie Murray (Galeton, PA/Galeton Area) and Worobey to trim the Giants' deficit to 3-2. Stacey then tied the game with an infield single that plated Long before Puckett delivered a go-ahead, two-run single to right field to give Keystone a 5-3 lead.
Cabrini got a run back in the top of the fourth inning to make it a one run game before getting a three-run double from Amber Dietrich in the fifth inning to claim a 7-5 lead. The visitors pushed the advantage to three runs with a two-out RBI single later in the inning before tacking on five more runs in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Dietrich, Gallagher, and Lindsay Savar, each had three hits in the game with Dietrich and Miles both driving in four runs in the victory.
Cabrini pitcher Kiley Sharp turned in a complete game to improve to 2-5 allowing five runs on 14 hits to go along with six strikeouts.
Scialpi went 4-4 in game two while Puckett's two RBIs paced Keystone's offense in the nightcap.
Schraden started in the circle for Keystone and went 3.1 innings in which she surrendered four runs on eight hits before Worobey (2-7) finished out the game and yielded nine runs on eight hits while fanning a pair of batters.
Keystone will return to action on Friday with a CSAC doubleheader at Immaculata University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Immaculata, PA.
