Men’s Basketball Tripped Up at Centenary, 86-75

Candemeres scores a game-high 25 points for Keystone in setback to Cyclones

Hackettstown, NJ – Andy Charles and Paul Jones combined for 40 points and 23 rebounds off the bench to lead host Centenary College to an 86-75 victory over Keystone College in a key Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball tilt on Wednesday evening in New Jersey.  The Cyclones improve to 9-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play after completing a regular season sweep of the Giants, who fall to 5-13 on the season and 5-6 in the CSAC.

Keystone built a 20-13 advantage midway through the first half of Wednesday night's game before pushing their lead to eight points, 25-17, with 7:20 remaining in the opening stanza on a layup by DaVaughn Roberts-Thomas (Port Arthur, TX/Silsbee).  Centenary used a 10-2 run to level the contest at 27-27 at the 4:44 mark before the Giants countered with a 7-0 spurt to hold a 34-27 lead with just under three and a half minute left on the clock.  The Cyclones rallied to take a 39-38 lead into halftime after outscoring Keystone 11-4 over the final three minutes of the period capped by a jumper from Charles just before the buzzer that put the hosts ahead at the break.

Charles led Centenary with 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half while Kyle Smith added eight points for the Cyclones, who shot 51.6 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 3-10 from three-point range and 4-6 from the free throw line in the period.

Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) led all scorers with 19 points in the first period while Rashaud Kelley (Sharon, PA/Paul Laurence Dunbar) and Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) netted eight points apiece.  Kelley corralled a team-best four rebounds for the Giants, who connected on 41.9 percent of their field goal attempts in the stanza including a 5-16 effort from beyond the arc and a 7-8 performance from the charity stripe.

The two teams went bucket for bucket over the first five and a half minutes of the second half.  Miles Dargan (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) gave Keystone a 50-48 edge with 14:33 remaining in regulation by converting a pair of free throws, but Centenary used a 9-0 run over the next minute-plus to claim a 57-50 lead.  After Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) hit a pair from the line to cut the Giants' deficit to five points, the Cyclones scored nine-consecutive points to open up a 66-52 lead with just over nine minutes left to play.

Keystone battled back into the game with a 13-3 run over the next five minutes to narrow their deficit to four points, 69-65 with 4:02 showing on the clock.  The Giants were unable to come any closer though as Centenary answered with an 11-3 run to hold an 80-68 cushion with just under two minutes left to play and the visitors were unable to cut their deficit back to single-digits the rest of the way.

Charles (22 points, 12 rebounds) and Jones (18 points and 11 rebounds) both came off the bench to record double-doubles to lead Centenary to the victory.  Josh Case added 15 points for the Cyclones, who got a team-leading four assists from Zachary Duymich and three blocked shots from Charles.  The hosts finished the contest hitting on 46.6 percent of their field goal attempts while going 36.8 percent from three-point range and 78.1 percent from the free throw line.

Candemeres finished with a game-high 25 points for Keystone while Lunsford ended the night with 19 points.  Kelley added 13 points to go along with a team-best seven rebounds while Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) led all players with five assists and three steals.  The Giants shot 32.3 percent from the floor in the loss including a 23.5 percent night from downtown while connecting on 78.1 percent of their free throw attempts.

The Giants were unable to avenge an 84-71 loss in December to the Cyclones despite forcing the hosts into 21 turnovers while giving the ball away just nine times as a team as Centenary held a 54-30 advantage in rebounding for the game.

Keystone returns home on Saturday afternoon to host Neumann University in CSAC contest scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.  The Giants will be looking to avenge an 80-68 setback to the Knights suffered on the road on December 6th
