La Plume, PA –Tiffany Phillips recorded a hat trick while Kerry Anne Farrell added a goal and three assists to lead Cabrini College to a 4-0 victory over Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers improve to 7-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play while the Giants slip to 3-7 this fall and 2-1 in the CSAC.
Amy Denmon (Beaumont, PA/Lake-Lehman) made 21 saves in Keystone's cage while
Justine Firmstone (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) and
Adrienne Mellot (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) added two defensive saves each in a gutsy defensive effort by the Giants.
Keystone had the first good scoring chance of Saturday's game as
Breanna Paulson (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) escaped behind Cabrini's defense five minutes into the game, but her shot on the breakaway opportunity went just wide of the right post. The Cavaliers broke the scoreless deadlock at the other end in the 15
th minute as Kerry Anne Farrell deflected Danielle Palatano's shot from the top the circle past Giants' goalie Denmon to give Cabrini a 1-0 advantage.
The Cavaliers took the one-goal lead into halftime after outshooting Keystone 12-2 in the opening 35 minutes of play. Denmon made nine stops while Firmstone added a defensive save to keep the Giants within striking distance heading into the second stanza.
Cabrini doubled their lead 9:22 into the second half when Farrell dribbled through a pair of Keystone defenders and slipped a pass to Tiffany Phillips at the back post where Phillips deposited the ball into a vacant net to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 advantage.
The Cavaliers added an insurance goal with 8:07 left in regulation when Farrell sent a crossing pass in front of the goal to Phillips, who rammed it home for her second goal of the game to push the Cabrini's lead to 3-0 before completing her hat trick with 1:06 remaining with a one-time shot off another assist from Farrell.
Cabrini goalie Taylor Bookman picked up the shutout win by making one save on the afternoon for the Cavaliers, who held a commanding, 34-3 advantage in shots while generating 20 penalty corners to just one for Keystone.
Paulson led the Giants with two shots on the afternoon while
Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, PA/Lackawanna Trail) recorded the host's only shot on goal in the contest.
Keystone will host Notre Dame of Maryland University next Saturday in a CSAC contest scheduled for 2:00 p.m. as part of Homecoming Weekend in La Plume.
