Volleyball Clinches First-Ever CSAC Playoff Berth With Win Over Immaculata

Giants defeat Mighty Macs in four sets in Dig Pink match

La Plume, PA – Keystone College's volleyball team clinched its first-ever Colonial States Athletic Conference playoff berth on Saturday with a four-set victory over visiting Immaculata University in the Giants' Dig Pink match.  Keystone lifts their overall record to 18-5 this fall including an 8-2 mark in league play with their first-ever win over the Mighty Macs, who slip to 12-7 on the fall and 7-3 in the CSAC.

Keystone currently sits in second place in the CSAC standings with one more match played then third place Neumann University (7-2 CSAC).  The Giants will close out the regular season next Wednesday night against Gwynedd Mercy University.  A win over the Griffins would guarantee Keystone at least one home playoff game while Neumann's results next week will dictate the Giants' chances at the #2 seed and a first round bye. Cabrini College (10-0 CSAC) has already locked up the top-seed for the conference playoffs

On Saturday, Keystone built a 20-16 lead in the opening set before Immaculata rallied after a timeout with six of the next seven points to claim a 22-21 edge.  The Giants snagged the next three points and, following a kill by the Mighty Macs, Carol Mosier (Hunlock Creek, PA/Lake-Lehman) ended the set with a kill of her own to give the hosts a 25-23 win.

Immaculata raced out to a 12-4 lead to start game two before Keystone surged to within four points at 18-14.  The Giants eventually drew to within three, but that was as close as the came as the Mighty Macs won the second set, 25-21.  The third set belonged to Keystone from start to finish as the hosts staked out a 14-6 advantage.  Leading 17-11, the Giants rattled over the next seven points of the set to get to set point, which they got on an attacking error by the visitors to win the frame 25-13.

The fourth set was tightly contested by both sides, with neither team holding an advantage of more than four points.  With Immaculata holding a 21-17 edge, Keystone score six of the game's next seven points to take a 23-22 edge.  The Mighty Macs came back with the next two points to serve for the set, but a Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) kill knotted the score at 24-24.  Immaculata then committed an attacking error to set up match point for the Giants, which they got courtesy of a Shatia Silas (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) kill to lock up their postseason bid.

Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) recorded her second-straight double-double and seventh of the season on a match-high 17 kills to go along with 16 digs and six service aces to lead the Giants while Larkin finished the match with a season-high 16 kills.

Sydney Binkley (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) led Keystone with 23 assists to go along with four aces while Mosier dished out 18 helpers while picking up nine digs.

Pamela Heitman (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) led all players with 30 digs, Ashley Williams (Virginia Beach, VA/Green Run) had five kills, five blocks, and four aces.  Zuchowski and Taylor Beatty (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) had a pair of blocks each in the win for the Giants, who posted a .192 hitting percentage on the day.

Gabrielle Guerrero powered Immaculata's attack with 15 kills, Shelby Belk had eight kills, and Morgan Wentz posted seven kills for the Mighty Macs, who hit .103 as a team in the loss.

Maranda Jones handed out a match-best 33 assists to go along with 11 digs, Vizzard added 21 digs, and Molly Truitt had 20 digs for Immaculata.

Keystone will host Gwynedd Mercy on Wednesday night in the final CSAC match of the regular season.  The Giants will honor Mosier, the team's lone senior, prior to the contest, which is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.
