Immaculata, PA –
Kouassi Kouadio (Mount Pocono, PA/Pocono Mountain East) scored five minutes into the second half of Tuesday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's soccer first round playoff game and Keystone College's defense made it stand as the Giants advanced to the CSAC semifinals with a 1-0 victory at Immaculata University. Keystone, the #6 seed, will travel to top-seeded Cabrini College for a conference semifinal on Thursday after leveling their record at 8-8-1 on the season.
Keystone, who avenged a 3-0 regular season defeat to the Mighty Macs, earned their first-ever CSAC playoff win to advance to the conference semifinals for the first time in program history. #2 Marywood University will host #5 Neumann University, a 2-1 winner over #4 Centenary College in Tuesday's other first round contest, in Thursday's other semifinal. The two semifinal winners will meet on Saturday for the CSAC championship at the site of the highest remaining seed with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line.
Both teams struggled to find the target in the first half, with Immaculata (8-11) holding a slim, 6-5 advantage in shots for the half, but Keystone put the only two shots on goal in the opening half.
Brandyn Favero (Beamsville, Ontario/Blessed Trinity Catholic) and
Frank Heter (Andover, NJ/Newton) put effort on frame in the 29
th and 35
th minutes, respectfully, but Joe Lubonski made a pair of saves for the Mighty Macs to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
Keystone broke the scoreless deadlock just five minutes into the second half as Kouadio picked up a bouncing ball in the penalty area and beat Lubonski for his third goal of the year with
Abreham Kittel (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson) assisting on the tally. Kittel's helper was his team-leading seventh assist of the season.
Immaculata spent the final 40 minutes in search of the equalizer, but were unable to find it thanks to a solid defensive effort by Keystone's backline led by
Jalen Freeman (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Regional),
Brandyn Favero (Beamsville, Ontario/Blessed Trinity Catholic),
Djavan Guy (New York, NY/St. John's Prep), and Alex Buccholz. The Mighty Mac only managed to put two shots in goal in the second half, but Keystone goalkeeper
Adam Zbiciak (Saint Johns, MI/St. Johns) was up to the task both times to record his second shutout of the season.
Both teams attempted 11 shots in the game with the Giants holding a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Immaculata had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks on the night.
Zbiciak posted his seventh win of the season with the clean sheet after making two saves while Lubonski suffered the loss in a three-save performance.
Eddy Enowbi (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) tied for a game-high with three shots while Kittel and
Ofentse Kale (Derwood, MD/Magruder) attempted a pair of shots each in the win for the Giants.
The start time for Thursday's semifinal contest at Cabrini is yet to be determined. Keystone dealt the Cavaliers, currently ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional rankings, their only loss in CSAC play this fall with a 3-2 victory in La Plume on Saturday as the Giants clinched a postseason bid.
