Aston, PA – Neumann University advanced to Saturday's Colonial States Athletic Conference volleyball championship match with a three-set victory over Keystone College in a conference semifinal on Thursday night. The second-seeded Knights improve to 16-19 on the season while the third-seeded Giants end a historic season with a 21-7 record. Keystone's 21 wins this fall are the second-most in program history, trailing only the 1992 squad that posted 22 wins.
Neumann will visit top-seeded Cabrini College, a three-set winner over #4 Immaculata University in Thursday's other semifinal, on Saturday for the conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Holding a 7-5 lead in Thursday's opening set, Neumann used an 8-2 run to open up a 15-7 lead. Keystone cut their deficit to 18-12 before the Knights rattled off seven of the game's final eight points to win the set 25-13.
Neumann raced out to an 11-3 lead in the second set before the Giants were able to narrow their deficit to 16-10. The hosts countered with a 4-1 spurt before going on to win 25-15 to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Keystone built a 5-2 lead early in the third frame before the Knights rallied to eventually tie the set at 13-apiece. After the visitors took a 15-14 lead, Neumann scored nine straight points before closing out the match with a 25-17 decision in the set.
Anna Waltz led all players with 11 kills for Neumann while Julia Malseed and Rachael Hoffman chipped in with eight kills apiece. Kat Wolf dished out a match-high 28 assists and 14 digs to go along with four service aces while Malseed picked up nine digs and served up a match-leading five aces for the Knights.
Neumann hit .277 as a team in the victory while holding a 13-5 advantage in aces of the Giants.
Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) paced Keystone's attack with seven kills while
Ashley Williams (Virginia Beach, VA/Green Run) and
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) put down four kills apiece in the loss.
Carol Mosier (Hunlock Creek, PA/Lake-Lehman) dished out eight assists and picked up seven digs in her final match in a Keystone uniform while
Sydney Binkley (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) handed out five helpers.
Pamela Heitman (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) led the visitors with 11 digs on the night while Zuchowski chipped in with seven digs. Mosier and Williams had a block each for the Giants, who posted a .022 hitting percentage as a team in the season-ending defeat.
Thursday's match marked the final contest of Mosier's career. The senior finishes her career as Keystone's all-time leader in assists while ranking in the top-10 in program history in kills, digs, blocks, and aces.
