La Plume, PA – Rosemont College's Jamier Hughes scored a pair of free throws with 2.6 seconds remaining to give the Ravens and 75-73 victory over Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Ravens boost their record to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in league play while the Giants remain winless in five contests (0-2 CSAC).
Both teams struggled offensively over the first 10 minutes of the first half on Saturday with Rosemont holding a 15-9 lead after nearly 11 minutes of play. Keystone went on a 6-0 spurt to tie the game at 15-apiece on a
Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, FL/Pembroke Pines Charter) three-pointer, but the Ravens would go back in front and lead by as many as eight points before taking a 34-28 lead at halftime.
Marcus Thomas led Rosemont with 9 first half points while Khai Roberts added seven points for the Ravens, who shot 36.1 percent from the field in the first half while going 3-10 from three-point range and 5-8 from the free throw line.
Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) paced Keystone with 11 points in the opening 20 minutes of play while
Eric Hardaway (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) netted six first half points.
Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) led all players with six rebounds in the stanza for the Giants, who connected on 39.1 percent of their attempts from the floor in the frame while going 2-7 from beyond the arc and 8-10 from the charity stripe.
Rosemont outscored Keystone 11-3 over the first four minutes of the second half to open up a 47-31 lead, but the Giants battled back to within five points, 63-58, with 7:34 remaining as
Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) scored on a layup. The Ravens countered with a three-pointer before the hosts embarked on a 9-3 to draw to within a field goal at 69-67 with 2:55 left on the clock when
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello) scored in the pain.
Following a made layup by the visitors, Peeples converted a pair of free throws before Monroe scored on a lay-in with 18 seconds left to tie the score at 75-75. Keystone nearly forced a turnover with Rosemont holding for the last shot, but the Ravens were awarded possession with four seconds remaining on a ball that went out of bounds. Hughes was followed on the ensuing inbounds play and converted the game-winning free throws as the Giants' attempt at the horn came after time had expired.
Thomas finished with a game-high 24 points for Rosemont while Hughes added 16 points and a team-leading five rebounds in the win. Roberts was the third Ravens' player in double-figures with 13 points as the visitors shot a solid, 66.7 percent in the second half to finish the game hitting on 47.4 percent of their field goal attempts while going 30.8 percent from downtown and 70.8 percent from the line.
Monroe led four Keystone players in double-figures with 14 points while Peeples netted 13 points and Drayton added 11 points and six rebounds. Jones added 10 points and game-highs of seven boards and three assists. Jones and
Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) paced the Giants with two steals apiece in the loss.
The hosts, who held a 34-29 advantage on the glass in the game, shot 59.3 percent from the floor in the second half to finish the contest hitting 50 percent of their shots including a 33.3 percent effort from beyond the arc. The Giants went 73.1 percent from stripe on the afternoon.
Keystone will be idle until Wednesday, December 16 when they host Manhattanville College in a non-conference matinee starting at 2:00 p.m. in the Gambal Center.
