Keystone’s Season Ends in CSAC Semifinals Despite Valiant Effort at Cabrini

Cavaliers advance to third-straight CSAC championship game with 90-76 win over Giants

Radnor, PA – Top-seeded Cabrini College advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball championship game with a 90-76 victory over fifth-seeded Keystone College in a semifinal matchup on Wednesday night.  The Cavaliers, who are currently ranked 21st in the nation, won their 17th consecutive game and 23 of their last 24 contests, improves to 23-3 on the season and will host #2 Immaculata University, a 74-46 winner over #3 Gwynedd Mercy University in Wednesday's other semifinal, on Saturday in the CSAC championship game.
 
Keystone (14-13) got five early points from Ashley Evans (Wooster, OH/Wooster) sandwiched around an Alyssa Cuomo (Odessa, DE/Hodgson Vo-tech) layup to hold a 7-6 lead in Wednesday night's semifinal tilt, but Cabrini answered with a the a 17-3 run to hold a 23-10 advantage with 13:13 remaining in the first half.  The Giants trimmed their deficit to eight points before the Cavaliers used an 11-2 surge to open up their largest lead of the half, 34-17, with 8:10 showing on the clock. 
 
A quick, 6-0 run by the visitors brought Keystone back to within 10 points at when AAliya Hayes (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) scored on a jumper to make it 38-28 game with just under four minutes left in the period, but the hosts were able to push their advantage to 46-32 heading into the locker room at halftime.
 
Cabrini's Amber Keys led all players with 21 points in the first half while Kristina Startare netted 12 points and Dana Peterson added 10 points in the period.  Megan Decker pulled down seven rebounds for the Cavaliers, who shot 47.5 percent from the field while going 5-10 from three-point range and 3-5 from the free throw line in the frame.    
 
Evans paced Keystone offensively with eight points in the opening stanza while Cuomo and Jazmyn Robinson (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern) chipped in with seven points apiece with Robinson also dishing out five assists and Cuomo leading the way on the glass by snagging seven boards.  The Giants connected on 35.1 percent of their attempts from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play and went 3-8 from downtown while converting all three of their free throw attempts in the half.
 
Cabrini opened the second half with an 11-3 run to extend their lead to 57-35 before opening up a 29-point advantage, 71-42, with 12:37 left in regulation.  A 6-0 burst by Keystone cut their deficit to 78-55 with just under nine minutes showing on the clock, and with 2:01 remaining, had trimmed their deficit to 16 points at 87-71 after Jerica Rode (Lords Valley, PA/Wallenpaupack) connected on a three-pointer.  A field goal from Chelsey Hropovich (Seward, PA/Ligonier Valley) with just over a minute remaining made it a 14-point game, but that was as close as the Giants would come as Cabrini advanced to Saturday's title game. 
 
Keys finished with a double-double on game-highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead Cabrini while Startare finished with 18 points.  Tayler Holmes (12 points) and Peterson (10 points) also finished in double-figures while Decker added 10 rebounds and five assists for the Cavaliers, who held a 60-35 advantage in rebounding for the game.  The hosts finished the contest hitting on 43.4 percent of their attempts from the field while going 40 percent from three-point land and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe.
 
Robinson led Keystone with 23 points to go along with game-highs of eight assists and four steals while Evans finished the contest with 20 points.  Rode added 13 points, Hayes netted eight points, and Cuomo finished with seven points while tying for a season-high with 13 rebounds.  The Giants shot 40.8 percent from the floor for the game including a solid, 47.4 percent effort from downtown while converting 56.3 percent of their free throw attempts.
 
Wednesday night's contest also marked the final game in a Keystone uniform for seniors Cuomo, Evans, Hropovich, Robinson, and Rode, who lead the Giants to at least 11 wins in each of their four seasons, three seasons with a winning record, and two CSAC semifinal appearances.
 
Robinson closes her career as Keystone's all-time leader and assists and steals in is third in program history in scoring with 1,254 points.  Cuomo finishes sixth all-time with 1,156 points, and Evans ends her career tied for ninth with 918 career points.  Rode's 99 career blocks are the third-most in program history while Hropovich finishes sixth all-time with 65 career blocks.
