Giants Fall to Knights in Overtime in High-Scoring CSAC Game, 102-96

Hayes ties a season-high with 23 points; Cuomo, Hensley, and Robinson record double-doubles in setback

Aston, PA – Visiting Keystone College overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to force overtime on Tuesday evening at Neumann University, but the Knights prevailed in a high-scoring Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball contest, 102-96 after going 6-8 from the field in the extra frame.  The two teams are both now 9-10 overall on the season and 6-4 in conference play and sit tied for fifth in the league standings with Neumann now holding the head-to-head tie-breaker.

AAliya Hayes (New Rochelle, NY/New Rochelle) came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points for Keystone which matched the sophomore's season-high and led five Giants in double-figures.  Alyssa Cuomo (Odessa, DE/Hodgson Vo-tech) (17 points, 13 rebounds), Cierra Hensley (Frederick, MD/Frederick) (17 points, 12 rebounds), and Jazmyn Robinson (Hyattsville, MD/Northwestern) (15 points, 12 assists) each recorded double-doubles while Ashley Evans (Wooster, OH/Wooster) contributed 12 points in the setback.

Robinson's game-high 12 assists mark a new career-high for the Giants' all-time leader in helpers and mark the second-most in a single game in Keystone history.  The senior guard also collected a game-high three steals for the Giants.

Neumann jumped out to a 27-14 lead over the first seven and a half minutes of Tuesday night's contest before Keystone used an 11-0 run to draw to within two points, 27-25, with 8:12 remaining in the opening half when Evans converted a pair of free throws.  The Knights countered with a 19-6 spurt over the next five and a half minutes to open up a 46-31 advantage before taking a 50-40 lead into halftime.

Keystone opened the second half with a 16-4 run and took their first lead of the game at the 15:37 mark on a layup by Hensley.  Neumann briefly went back to the point and held a 62-58 edge with 13:45 remaining in regulation, but the Giants countered with a 13-3 run to hold a 71-65 lead midway through the period.

The Knights rallied back in front, 80-77, on a three-pointer at the 5:10 mark, but Hayes followed up a pair of made free throws with a layup to give Keystone an 81-80 edge.  The hosts went back in front with a lay-in at the other end and held an 87-33 edge with 1:33 remaining in regulation, but after a field goal by Robinson, Jerica Rode (Lords Valley, PA/Wallenpaupack) hit a pair of free throws with 30 seconds left on the clock to tie the game at 87-87.  Rode then corralled a defensive rebound at the other end setting up a chance for a potential game-winning bucket for Keystone, but a layup would not go and the Giants headed to overtime for the first time on the season.

Neumann opened the five-minute overtime period with a three-pointer, and after the Giants and Knights traded field goals, Rode connected from downtown to knot the score back up at 92-apiece.  The hosts, however, would pull out the win by outscoring Keystone 10-4 over the final 3:25 of overtime.

JoHanna Metzger paced the Knights with 21 points and game-highs of 15 rebounds and four blocked shots while Lauren Legler added a double-double on 21 points and 10 boards.  Jessica Schlesman (19), Emily Lyons (18), and Sarah Roberts (17) also reached double-figures for Neumann with Schlesman and Roberts dishing out 10 assists apiece in the victory.  The Knights finished the game hitting on 45.9 percent of their field goal attempts while going 41.9 percent from three-point land and 78.6 percent from the free throw line.  The hosts went 6-8 from the floor in overtime while converting both of their free throw attempts in the extra frame.

Keystone, who held a 57-47 advantage in rebounding for the game, enjoyed a 27-6 advantage in points off the bench while Neumann finished plus-six in the turnover department.  The Giants ended the night shooting 41.9 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from long range, and an outstanding, 90.5 percent from the free throw line as the visitors missed just two of their 21 attempts from the stripe.

Keystone will have a quick turnaround as they travel back down the turnpike tomorrow evening to take on Gwynedd Mercy University in a CSAC contest scheduled to tipoff at 6:00 p.m. in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania.
