Jesse Longmire (Harlem, NY/John S. Burke Catholic) scored a season-high 22 points to lead five Keystone College players in double-figures on Saturday afternoon against Cabrini College, but it wasn't enough as the Cavaliers prevailed 104-92 in an intense Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball game in the Gambal Athletic Center. Cabrini improves to 13-9 on the season and 10-5 in league play while the Giants slip to 7-14 overall and 7-7 in the CSAC.
Jair Green, Vinny Walls, and Aaron Walton-Moss combined to score 73 points to lead Cabrini on Saturday as the Cavaliers avenged a 95-93 loss to Keystone in the first meeting between the two teams on January 19
th.
Cabrini built a 20-11 lead over the opening eight minutes of Saturday afternoon's contest before Keystone used a 10-2 run to cut their deficit to one point midway through the first half. The Cavaliers managed to stay in front and would lead by as many as eight points before taking a 50-43 lead into the locker room at the intermission.
Walls netted 15 first-half points, Walton-Moss scored 11 points, and Green added 10 points in the opening 20 minutes of play to lead the Cavaliers, who shot 52.8 percent from the floor in the period while going 6-13 from three-point range and 6-9 from the free throw line.
Longmire and
Dan Candemeres (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) tallied 13 points apiece in the opening 20 minutes of play with Longmire leading Keystone with four rebounds in the first frame. As a team, the Giants connected on 38.2 percent of their attempts from the floor including a 40 percent clip from beyond the arc while going 13-14 from the charity stripe in the first half.
Cabrini pushed their lead to 57-47 early in the second half before Keystone used a 14-4 run to level the contest at 61-apiece with 14:38 remaining in regulation after
Rashaud Kelley (Sharon, PA/Paul Laurence Dunbar) and
Miles Dargan (Orlando, FL/Wekiva) connected on back-to-back treys. The Cavaliers went back in front on a three-pointer of their own and pushed their lead to eight points before the Giants battled back to take an 81-79 lead at the 6:16 mark on a fast break lay-in from Dargan.
After Walls hit a pair of free throws to knot the score back up, Longmire scored on a layup to briefly put the hosts back at the point, but Walls countered from distance to spark a decisive, 15-2 run for Cabrini that gave the visitors a 96-85 lead with 1:20 remaining in regulation, and the visitor went 8-10 from the free throw line the rest of the way to close out the victory.
Walls and Green tied for a game-high with 25 points apiece to lead the Cavaliers while Walton-Moss finished with 23 points, a game-high 17 points, and seven assists. Tyheim Monroe added 11 boards for Cabrini, who held a 46-32 advantage on the glass for the game while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from beyond the arc, and 65.9 percent from the line.
In addition to Longmire's 22 points, Candemeres added 19 points, Dargan and
DaVaughn Roberts-Thomas (Port Arthur, TX/Silsbee) each tallied 15 points, while
Duncan Lunsford (Marietta, GA/Sprayberry) contributed 11 points for Keystone. Candemeres tied for a game-high with seven assists while Roberts-Thomas led the Giants with eight rebounds on the day. The hosts finished the contest hitting on 45.1 percent of their shots from the floor while going 29.2 percent from downtown and 80.8 percent from the stripe.
Keystone hits the road on Wednesday evening for a huge CSAC contest at Immaculata University beginning at 8:00 p.m. The Giants will look to complete a regular season series sweep of the Mighty Macs following their 89-87 win on January 13
th in La Plume.
