Fort Myers, FL – Johns Hopkins University overcame an early, 3-0 deficit and pulled away late in a 9-4 victory over Keystone College in a non-conference baseball game on Monday afternoon in Florida. The Blue Jays, who are currently receiving votes for the D3baseball.com Top 25, improve to 4-1 on the season while the Giants fall to 4-2 on the year.
Keystone jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as
Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) hit a two-run single to drive in
Anthony Muccio (Tarrytown, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) and
Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ) and the Giants added another run in the visitor's third when Rojas scored on a
Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) base hit.
Johns Hopkins came back and tied the game with a three-run fifth inning by getting a sacrifice fly followed by a two-run single and the Blue Jays took a 5-3 lead the following inning on another two-run base knock.
Keystone made it a one-run ballgame in the top of the eighth inning with
Kevin Luciano (Everett, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School) belting a double to left field that scored Rojas, but the Giants were unable to come any closer as Johns Hopkins pulled away with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Jacob Enterlin tossed a complete game to pick up the win for the Blue Jays, allowing eight hits while striking out seven batters.
Mike Smith went 2-4 with three RBIs while Conor Reynolds collected four hits to lead the Blue Jays offensively.
Dan Maguire (Ocean Township, NJ/Ocean Township) suffered the loss on the mound for Keystone after allowing seven runs – four of which were earned – in 7.1 innings of work while fanning three batters.
Jake Granteed (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) was charged with two runs against in the final 0.2 innings on the hill for the Giants.
Rojas finished the day 3-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored while Luciano and Herceg added two hits apiece for the Giants.
Keystone continues their spring break trip in Florida with a pair of games on Tuesday. The Giants will take on Plattsburgh State at 9:00 a.m. before another tilt against Johns Hopkins that is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
