Myrtle Beach, SC – After scoring just five runs in their first five games of the season, Keystone College's bats came alive on Thursday morning as the Giants erupted for nine runs in the second inning and pulled away with a 13-0 victory in five innings over York (NY) College. Keystone wraps up their spring break trip to South Carolina with a 2-4 overall record.
Kimberly Rivera (New York, NY/South Bronx Campus) and
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, PA/Pittston Area) had three RBIs apiece to power the Giants' offense on Thursday while pitchers
Sara Schraden (Allentown, PA/William Allen) and
Karissa Worobey (Scranton, PA/Scranton) combined to record the shutout while recording 12 of their 15 outs via the strikeout.
Keystone took control of the game in the bottom of the second inning, scoring nine runs on just four hits while working out nine walks.
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, PA/Lake-Lehman) scored the game's first run on a passed ball before
Lindsey Bucklaw (Carbondale, PA/Carbondale Area) stole home. Rivera made it a 4-0 game with a two-run double before scoring on a Scialpi double.
Schraden hit a two-run double of her own and scored on a
Kaitlyn Sawicki (Factoryville, PA/Lackawanna Trail) base hit before
Breelyn Johnson-Fite (Bogota, NJ/Bergen County Technical) drew a bases-loaded walk to force home the Giants' ninth run.
Keystone tacked on the final four runs of the game in the home fourth. Sawicki scored on a Bucklaw single before coming home on a Rivera sacrifice fly. Scialpi closed out the scoring with a two-run single to left that plated Worobey and
Shannon Dermont (Scranton, PA/West Scranton).
Schraden picked up the win in the circle to improve to 2-1 on the season after working the first three innings on the rubber for Keystone and struck out seven batters while allowing three hits. Worobey tossed the final two innings and fanned five batters.
Scialpi, Sawicki, and
Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Lourdes Regional) had two hits apiece for the Giants while Worobey, Sawicki, and Bucklaw each score a pair of runs each. The Giants, who outhit the Cardinals 9-3 on the day, drew 12 walks in the game.
Keystone is scheduled to open Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Gwynedd Mercy College. Opening pitch is slated to be thrown at 12:00 p.m. in Gwynedd Valley, Pennsylvania.
