La Plume, PA – Marywood University dealt host Keystone College their first Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader sweep since the Giants began playing in the league by taking a pair of seven-inning contests on Monday at Keystone's Christy Mathewson Field. The Pacers won the first game 15-8 before using a six-run top of the seventh inning to rally for a dramatic, 7-6 victory in the nightcap to improve to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
The Giants dropped to 9-6 overall and 0-2 in the CSAC after suffering the sweep, their first since beginning play in the conference in 2009.
In Monday's opener, Keystone sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning and opened up a 3-0 lead on RBI singles from
Louis Reyes (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast),
Kevin Luciano (Everett, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School), and
Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva).
Marywood answered with seven runs on five hits in the top of the third inning to claim a 7-3 before the Giants got a run back in the home half of the frame on an RBI base hit from
Chris Bzozowski (Westampton, NJ/Bishop Eustace).
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Reyes singled home
Anthony Muccio (Tarrytown, NY/Archbishop Stepinac) before
Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ) came home on a wild pitch to cut the host's deficit to 7-6.
The Pacers countered with four runs in the visitor's fifth to open up an 11-6 lead, getting a two-run single from Vince Rebar along with RBI base knocks from Erik Pulkkinen and Matt Staback.
Eduardo Familia (Bronx, NY/Collegio Utesianode Estudios Integrados) hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored
Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial) in the bottom half of the frame to make it a four-run contest.
Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) scored on a Marywood throwing error in the bottom of the sixth inning as Keystone pulled to within three runs at 11-8, but Marywood pulled away with four runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Rebar led the Pacers with a 4-4, four-RBI performance in Monday's opener while Daniel Hull, Tommy Smith, and Nic Arrue had two hits apiece for Marywood, who outhit Keystone 15-13 in the win.
Marywood starting pitcher Bryan Noonan improved to 2-0 on the season despite allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 4.2 innings of work. Russell Baldino was charged with one run on one hit in an inning of work before turning the ball over to Joseph DiLoreto, who was perfect in the final 1.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts to close out the win.
Reyes, Rojas, Luciano, Herceg, and Bzozowski each had tow hits for the Giants in the game one loss.
Keystone starter
Hector Vargas (Queens, NY/Forest Hills) (2-1) was charged with the loss after surrendering 7 runs on five hits and four walks to go along with a pair of strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work.
Dan Maguire (Ocean Township, NJ/Ocean Township) yielding four runs on eight hits and fanned two batters in 2.2 innings of work while
Rob DePhillips (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) and
Jack Simons (Great Falls, VA/Bullis School) both surrendered a pair of runs in an inning of work with Simons adding one K.
In the second game, Luciano and Ross hit RBI singles in the bottom of the first inning to give Keystone an early, 2-0 advantage. Marywood got a run back on an RBI base hit from Hull in the top of the third inning, but the Giants countered in the bottom half of the frame when Ross scored on a sacrifice fly from Bzozowski.
Keystone pushed their lead to 5-1 with a pair of two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ross scored from first on a pinch-hit double to the gap in left-center by Reyes before crossing the plate on a steal of home.
Marywood took advantage of a pair of costly Keystone errors in the bottom of the seventh inning and coupled five hits with one hit-batsman to put up six runs in the inning to claim a 7-5 lead. Mark Sherlock's two-out, two-run single to right give the Pacers the lead before Arrue came home with a much-needed insurance run on a wild pitch.
Down to their last at bats,
Cody Darley (Port St. Lucie, FL/Treasure Coast) drew a bases loaded walk that forced home Ross to make it a 7-6 game, but the Giants were unable to push across the tying run despite still having the bases and only one out as Hull came on to the mound to pick up the save.
Pacers' starter Justin Perez took a no-decision after giving up five runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work. Robert Flynn was charged with one run in 0.1 innings of work while DiLoreto walked one and hit a batter. Hull picked up the save by retiring the final three Keystone batters in the seventh.
Pulkkinen, Hull, Smith, and Sherlock each had two hits for Marywood in game two.

Darren Lauer (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) (2-1) was solid on the mound despite suffering the loss, as all seven runs charged to the right-hander were unearned. Lauer struck out six batters in 6.2 innings of work before
Charles Morreale (Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) recorded the final out on the mound for the Giants with a strikeout.
Luciano went 3-4 at the plate in the nightcap with a pair of RBIs while Ross added two hits and two runs scored.
Keystone will look to get back in the win column Wednesday in a non-conference game at Susquehanna University that is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
