La Plume, PA – Trailing 4-3 and down to their final out, visiting Centenary College rallied with four runs in the top of the ninth inning and held on for a 7-5 victory over Keystone College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game on Sunday afternoon at Christy Mathewson Field. The Cyclones improve to 13-9 on the season and 5-6 in conference play with their first-ever win in 25 games against the Giants, who slip to 15-10 overall and 3-4 in the CSAC.
Keystone took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning without a hit as
Dylan Corl (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch ) was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Corl then took third on a fly out to the left field wall by
Gaston Rojas (Carmel, NY/Carmel) before coming home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Alex Herceg (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial).
The Giants doubled their lead in the home fourth as
Nate Ross (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva) scored on a double to the gap in left-center by
Eduardo Familia (Bronx, NY/Collegio Utesianode Estudios Integrados) before Rojas laced a solo home run over the left-center field fence in the fifth inning to extend Keystone's lead to 3-0.
Centenary scored three runs on two hits and two Keystone errors in the top of the seventh inning to level the score at 3-3, but the Giants went back in front in their half of the frame as Rojas reached on an infield single, stole second, and scored on a two-out, Herceg base hit to left field.
Down to their final out, Cyclones' pinch hitter JP Trotman hit a single up the middle that scored pinch runner Ryan Mariotti from second, tying the game at 4-4 before Chris Kiesel came home with the go-ahead run on a wild pitch as the visitors took their first lead of the game, 5-4. Dave Raifsnider then followed with a two-run single to center that pushed the visitor's lead to 7-4.
Rojas drove in
Julian Lanfranco (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) with a single to left field with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it a two-run game, but that was all the offense that Keystone was able to generate against winning pitcher Chad Frankenfield (1-0), who left the potential tying run at the plate, capping off a two-inning effort on the mound.
Centenary starter John Stanziale took a no-decision after allowing three runs on five hits and two walks to go along with one strikeout in six innings of work before handing the ball off to Danny Derner, who was charged with one run on three hits in one inning for the Cyclones, who were paced offensively by Ryan Caparoni's pair of hits.
Keystone starting pitcher
Darren Lauer (New Hope, PA/Council Rock North) (2-3) suffered a tough loss after striking out eight batters and yielding just four earned runs on nine hits in 8.2 innings on the hill.
Jake Granteed (West Pittston, PA/Wyoming Area) struck out the only batter he faced to work out of the ninth inning without any further damage.
Rojas led the Giants with a 3-4 day at the plate with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored while Herceg also drove in a pair of runs in the loss.
Kevin Luciano (Everett, MA/Cambridge Rindge and Latin School) also extended his hitting streak to 24 games on the season.
Keystone returns to the field on Monday afternoon with a non-conference game against Montclair State University that will start at 3:30 p.m. in La Plume.
