La Plume, Pa. - Emelie Meinhart and Cara Basile both posted double-doubles on Monday night to lead visiting Wilkes University to a 70-49 victory over Keystone College in the Giants' final non-conference women's basketball game of the season. The Colonels lift their record to 2-10 on the season with the win while the Giants slip to 6-8 overall.
Leading 8-7 with 3:45 remaining in the first period of Monday's tilt, Wilkes rattled off the game's next six points to open up a 14-7 lead before Keystone cut their deficit to 14-12 at the end of the first stanza as
Brianna Nolen (Union Bridge, MD/Walkersville) scored a buzzer-beating layup after
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, PA/John Bartram) halted the visitor's run with a three-pointer.
The Colonels opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run before Keystone climbed back to within five points, 24-19, after
April Acosta (Bronx, NY/Evander Childs) made one of two from the free throw line at the 2:48 mark. Wilkes went back up by as many as nine points before taking a 29-21 lead in the halftime intermission.
Wilkes's Emily Sofranko led all scorers in the first half with 9 points while Haley Mesaros netted seven points in the opening 20 minutes of play. Meinhart added eight rebounds and four assists for the Colonels, who shot 32.3 percent from the field in the first two periods while going 3-10 from three-point range and 6-10 from the free throw line.
Samantha Donahue (Taylor, PA/Riverside) paced Keystone in the first half with six points while
Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, NY/Paramus Catholic) totaled five points and six boards.
Dyjae Williams (Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) added four caroms in the half for the Giants, who shot just 19.2 percent from the field including a 3-9 effort from beyond the arc and an 8-14 showing from the charity stripe.
Wilkes started the third period quickly, building up a 41-23 advantage with a 12-4 spurt to open the frame. The Colonels extended their lead to a game-high 23 points before Keystone scored the final eight points of the quarter to trail by 15, 50-35, heading into the final 10 minute stanza.
The hosts netted the first five points of the fourth period to climb to within 10 points at 50-40, but Wilkes dashed any hopes of a Keystone comeback with a 10-0 run of their own to hold a 60-40 advantage with four and a half minutes remaining before pulling away with the 21-point victory.
Sofranko led all scorers with 15 points to go along with a game-high five assists for the Colonels. Meinhart posted a double-double on 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds while Basile also posted a double-double on 11 points and 11 boards. Emily Sutton chipped in with 10 points for Wilkes, who shot 36.2 percent from the field, 20 percent from three-point land, and 73.9 percent from the line.
Garrett finished with a team-best 13 points for Keystone while Hall notched her sixth double-double of the season on 11 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds. Williams finished with a career-high 12 rebounds and Donahue led the Giants with three assists. Acosta and
Emily Hutton (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) corralled five rebounds each while Hall, Williams, and Acosta also had two steals apiece for the hosts, who shot 25 percent from the field, 31.3 percent from long range, and 48.5 percent from the stripe in the defeat.
For the game, Wilkes held a 53-46 advantage in rebounding and were plus-seven (15-22) in the turnover department.
Keystone returns to action on Wednesday evening with a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup against Immaculata University. Opening tipoff between the Giants and Mighty Macs is set for 6:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center.
