Gwynedd Valley, Pa. –
Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) posted career-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Keystone College dropped an 88-62 decision at Gwynedd Mercy University on Tuesday night in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action. The Griffins lift their record to 6-5 overall this season with the win while remaining unbeaten in conference play at 4-0.
Gwynedd Mercy got off to a fast start on Tuesday, racing out to a 15-3 lead over the first three and a half minutes of play.
Eric Hardaway (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) and Williams scored back-to-back buckets to bring Keystone (0-8, 0-3 CSAC) to within eight points before the Griffins opened up a 23-9 advantage at the 12:43 mark.
The Giants then embarked on a 13-6 run, cutting their deficit to seven points, 29-22, when
James Cooper (Freehold, NJ/Pius X) drained a three-pointer with just under eight minutes remaining in the opening half. Gwynedd Mercy countered with 12-straight points and would hold a 45-29 lead at halftime after closing the frame with a 14-5 run.
Cedric Elleby led all scorers with 12 points in the opening 20 minutes of play while Julian Hyden and Brian Hennessey added eight points apiece for the Griffins, who shot 42.9 percent from the field in the half while going 4-10 from beyond the arc and 11-13 from the free throw line.
Williams paced Keystone's offense with nine points in the first half while
Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) came off the bench to net five points. Hardaway and
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello) added four points in the half for the Giants, who posted a 38.7 percent effort from the field in the period while going 3-12 from downtown and 2-6 from the charity stripe.
Gwynedd Mercy scored the first eight points of the second half to open up a 24-point lead before Keystone battled back with a 13-2 burst to narrow their deficit to 55-42 on a layup by Williams with 12:38 left in regulation.
The hosts pushed their lead back to as many as 19 points before the Giants battled fought back again to within 13 points on a
Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) trey with 5:21 remaining, but that was as close as Keystone would come as Gwynedd Mercy outscored the Giants 21-8 the rest of the way.
Elleby finished with a game-high 23 points to go along with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Griffins, who got 12 points from Hyden and 10 points apiece from Hennessey and Courtney Cubbage. Darnell Artis dished out a game-best nine assists for Gwynedd Mercy, who finished the night connecting on 45.2 percent of their field goal attempts, 23.5 percent of their three-point efforts, and 73.7 percent of their shots from the line. The hosts held a 46-39 edge on the glass for the game and were plus-eight (7-15) in turnovers.
Williams's career-best double came on an 8-11 shooting performance including 3-5 efforts from both three-point range and the foul line. Jones and Drayton added eight points each while Monroe chipped in with seven points for the Giants, who connected on 36.5 percent of their field goal attempts while going 29.2 percent from beyond the arc and 56.3 percent from the line.
Jones and
Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) tied from the Keystone team-lead with five assists apiece while
Bryan Williams (Los Angeles, CA/Rialto) blocked a pair of shots in the loss.
The Giants return home on Thursday evening as they play host to Cabrini College in a CSAC tilt scheduled to tipoff at 8:00 p.m. in La Plume.
