Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points and five other Giants netted nine points or more to lift Keystone College's men's basketball team to their first victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, 69-66, over host Cairn University in Colonial States Athletic Conference action. The Giants withstood a late push by the Highlanders (5-7, 2-4 CSAC) to lift their record to 1-9 overall on the season and 1-4 in conference play.
The first half of Saturday afternoon's tilt was a back-and-forth affair with the two teams trading the lead 13 times over the opening 20 minutes of the contest. Cairn used a 9-1 run midway through the stanza to claim a 21-15 advantage with 8:25 remaining in the period, but Keystone countered with the game's next 15 points to lead 30-21 at the 4:14 mark when
Eric Hardaway (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) scored on a layup.
The Highlanders pushed back with the next five points before the Giants took a 34-28 lead into the locker room at halftime after
Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) scored the final basket of the frame.
Hardaway led Keystone with eight points in the first half, Monroe netted seven points, and Jones and
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello) chipped in with six points apiece.
Bryan Williams (Los Angeles, CA/Rialto) was the Giants leading rebounder in the half with four boards while
Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) dished out five assists for the visitors, who connected on 48.4 percent of their field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 1-8 from three-point range and 3-6 from the free throw line.
Gerroid Doughty scored 13 points and corralled four boards in the first half while Julian Collazo added six points for Cairn, who shot 35.7 percent from the field in the opening frame while going 3-9 from beyond the arc and 5-7 from the line.
Keystone extended its lead to eight points early in the second half before Cairn used a 13-1 run to take a 43-39 lead with 13:18 remaining in regulation. Keystone surged back in front, 48-47 on a layup by Jones, who then hit a three-pointer to push the Giants' lead to four points midway through the half.
The two teams swapped the lead four times over the next five and a half minutes with Keystone seizing the lead for good at the 4:30 mark on a Drayton lay-in that sparked a quick, 6-0 run by the Giants that gave them a 65-60 edge with 3:08 remaining. Cairn cut their deficit to 67-65 with 1:18 showing on the clock before
Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) scored a layup to put the Giants back up by four. After the Highlanders made the backend of a pair of free throws to draw to within three points, the host had a late shot to tie the game, but the last second three-point attempt would not fall.
Jones went 7-17 from the field to net his team-high 17 points for Keystone while Monroe and Drayton finished with 10 points apiece. Hardaway,
Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello), and
James Cooper (Freehold, NJ/Pius X) scored nine points each in the win with Drayton posting game-highs of eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Peeples led all players with six assists and four steals for the Giants, who held a 39-36 advantage in rebounding for the game. Keystone finished the contest hitting on 46.8 percent of their field goal attempts while going 3-18 from downtown and 8-19 from the charity stripe.
Doughty netted a game-high 23 points to go along with team-bests of seven points and five assists to lead Cairn while JD Zamroz (15) and Collazo (12) also reached double-figures in scoring in the loss. The Highlanders shot 39.3 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from long range, and 68.2 percent from the line in the loss.
Both teams committed 13 turnovers each on the day.
Keystone will return to action at on Monday night when they visit Cabrini College for a rematch of Wednesday night's CSAC game in La Plume that the Cavaliers won 80-72. Monday's contest will tipoff at 6:30 p.m. in Radnor, Pennsylvania.
