Radnor, Pa – Keystone College erased a 16-point second half deficit on Monday evening at Cabrini College, but the Cavaliers used a 14-4 run over a five span to pull away with a 102-85 victory over the Giants in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action. The Cavaliers lift their record to 7-5 on the season and 5-1 in conference play while extending their winning streak to five games.
Tyree Jones (Harlem, NY/Holcombe L. Rucker) scored a game-high 22 points,
James Cooper (Freehold, NJ/Pius X) posted a career-high for the second-straight game with 20 points, while
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello) added his fifth double-double of the season on 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead Keystone (1-10, 1-5 CSAC) in their second setback to Cabrini in the last five days. The Cavaliers defeated the Giants 80-72 when the teams met last Thursday night in La Plume.
Cabrini staked out a 20-12 advantage over the first 7:47 of Monday's contest before Keystone used a 7-0 run to level the game at 27-apiece with 6:49 remaining in the first half on a layup by Jones. The Cavaliers countered with the next five points and scored the final eight points of the opening stanza to hold a 47-36 advantage at the break.
Ace Henry led Cabrini in the first half with 12 points, Jair Green tallied 11 points, and Ryan Charity added 10 points off the bench for the Cavaliers, who shot 39.5 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 8-14 from three-point range and 5-11 from the free throw line.
Cooper came off of the Giants' bench to lead all scorers in the opening half with 14 points while Jones netted 13 points in the frame. Drayton pulled down a team-best six rebounds while
Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) dished out five assists for Keystone, who connected on 35.3 percent of their attempts from the floor in the period including a 5-13 clip from downtown and a 7-9 showing at the charity stripe.
Cabrini extended their lead to 59-43 over the first 2:42 of the second half before Keystone used a 23-6 run over the next 5:57 to claim a 66-65 edge on a jumper by Drayton. The hosts twice went ahead by a pair in the next two minutes, but the Giants leveled the score both times as Drayton and Peeples both hit a pair of free throw attempts, that latter tying the game at 70-70 with 9:03 remaining.
The Cavaliers seized control of the game with a 14-3 run the game them an 84-73 lead with just under four minutes remaining. The visitors cut their deficit to eight points with 1:52 remaining, but Cabrini outscored the Giants 11-2 the rest of the way to complete the regular season sweep.
Green finished with a team-best 21 points for Cabrini while Charity totaled 20 points on the night. Henry added 17 points, Tyheim Monroe added a double-double on 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Ivan Robinson added 11 points and a game-high eight assists for the Cavaliers. The hosts, who held a 57-50 advantage in rebounding of the game and committed just six turnovers, shot 44 percent from the floor for the game including a 57.9 performance from three-point land and a 61 percent night at the line.
Joining Jones, Cooper, and Drayton in double-figures for Keystone were Peeples with 12 points and a team-leading seven assists and
Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ), who netted 10 points. Jones also led the Giants with a pair of blocked shots while Drayton collected a team-leading pair of steals for the visitors, who turned the ball over 12 times. Keystone finished the evening hitting on 38.6 percent of their shots from the field while going 37.5 percent from long range and 78.6 percent from the stripe.
The Giants return home to the Gambal Athletic Center on Wednesday evening as they take on Immaculata University in a conference matchup scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
