La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College dealt visiting Marywood University its first loss in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer play this season, topping the Pacers 2-1 on Wednesday night in La Plume. The Giants improve to 6-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play with just their second win in 14 games against Marywood (6-5-1, 6-1 CSAC) and first since 2004.
Keystone opened the scoring just 1:02 into Wednesday night's contest to take the early, 1-0 lead. After a blocked shot,
Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View) one-timed a low blast just inside the left post from the top of the box for her third goal of the season.
The Giants had a golden opportunity to double their lead in the 28
th minute when
Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) broke free on a breakaway, but her shot went just wide of the far post.
Marywood found the equalizer in the 31
st minute when Emily Kotcho headed in a corner kick served in by Jackie VonItter at the back post.
The Pacers nearly went ahead in the 40
th minute, but Brianna Untener saw her shot from 18 yards out ring off the goalpost.
The two sides remained deadlocked at halftime with Marywood holding a 7-3 advantage in shots including a 4-1 lead in shots on goal over the opening 45 minutes of play.
Much like the first half, Keystone found the back of the net early in the second stanza as
Jenna Moranski (Gardiner, N.Y./New Paltz) headed home a cross from
Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, N.Y./Stamford Central) just 1:51 into the second half to put the Giants back in front, 2-1. Moranski's tally was her team-leading sixth of the season and would stand as her third game-winning goal of the year while Ehrhart's helper was her team-best fifth assist of the fall.
Marywood spent the rest of the half in search of another equalizer, but were unable to find it despite outshooting the hosts 15-4 over the final 45 minutes of play.
The Giants back four of
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area),
Rebecca Lewis (Abingdon, Md./Aberdeen),
Kassadi Woods (Trumansburg, N.Y./Charles O. Dickerson), and
Tristin Williams (Albany, N.Y./Guilderland) came up down the stretch, as did goalkeeper
Rebekah Shepherd (South Canaan, Pa./Western Wayne), who picked up the win in goal for Keystone after making seven saves in the second half.
Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington) took a no-decsion after turning aside three shots by the Pacers in the first half include a dangerous free kick shortly after Keystone took the early lead.
Aly Moyer suffered the loss in a three-save effort in Marywood's net.
Keystone will host Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon in another key conference matchup starting at 2:30 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
