Hackettstown, N.J. – Host Centenary University scored five unanswered goals on Thursday afternoon to overcome an early deficit to Keystone College, defeating the Giants 5-1 in the regular season finale for both teams. The Cyclones will take a 9-8 overall record into next week's CSAC playoffs and will be the #3 seed after finishing the year with an 8-3 record in conference play.
Thursday's contest marked the final game in a Keystone uniform for seniors
Zana Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter),
Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, N.Y./Stamford Central), and
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) who make up the winningest four-year class in program history. The Giants finished the year with a 7-8-1 overall record including a 4-6-1 mark in CSAC contests.
Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View) gave Keystone a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute of Thursday's contest, putting a loose ball past Centenary goalkeeper Justine Stefura for her sixth goal of the season and team-leading 17
th point of the fall.
Centenary closed the half with four unanswered goals to take 4-1 advantage into the halftime break. Kristin Karszen tied the game in the 27
th minute by finding the back off the net off an Amanda Benoit assist before Jessie Sharr put the Cyclones ahead in the 30
th minute off a feed from Chloe Christopher.
Benoit scored an unassisted goal in the 37
th minute before Karszen netted her second goal of the afternoon of assists from Christopher and Emily Pizzuto with just 45 seconds showing on the first half clock to give the Cyclones the three-goal cushion at the intermission.
Centenary opened up a 5-1 lead in the 55
th minute when Kara LaPolice scored with Benoit picking up her second helper of the afternoon on what would stand as the game's final tally.
Stefura made three saves to pick up the win for the Cyclones while Keystone goalkeeper
Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington) turned aside seven shots on the afternoon.
Centenary claimed a 17-10 advantage in shots for the game including a 12-4 lead in shots on goal. The Cyclones also held a 6-4 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Richner led Keystone with five shot attempts in the loss while
Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) and
Kristy Hansen (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) took a pair of shots each in the season-ending setback.
