Giants Defeat Merchant Marine For First Win of Season, 83-66

Williams scores career-high 28 points in consolation game of Scotty Wood Tournament

Allentown, Pa. – Devin Williams (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) scored a career-high 28 points to lead Keystone College to an 83-66 victory over  the United State Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College.  The Giants level their record at 1-1 on the season while the Mariners fall to 0-2.
 
Deion Monroe (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston ) hit back-to-back three pointers to start the game as Keystone raced out to a 20-4 lead over the first 6:53 on Saturday's contest.  USMMA countered with a 23-9 run to cut the Giants' lead to just two points at 29-27 with four minutes left in the first half.  Keystone netted the next six points of the game and held a 38-30 lead at halftime.
 
Williams led Keystone with 10 points in the opening 20 minutes of play while Monroe and John Kirkpatrick (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) added six points apiece for the Giants, who shot 41.7 percent from the field in the first half while going 4-10 from three-point range and 4-6 from the free throw line.
 
Matt Miller tallied 22 points to lead USMMA, who went 26.3 percent from the floor in the first half while going 5-14 from beyond the arc and 5-5 from the stripe.
 
Holding a 40-32 advantage early in the second half, Keystone used a 22-7 burst to build a 62-39 advantage with 11:49 left in regulation.  The Mariners pulled to within 10 points at 67-57 with 4:38 left on the clock, but the Giants maintained a double-figure lead the rest of the way to secure their first win of the season.
 
Williams, who was named to the All-Tournament Team at the end of the evening, scored his career-best 28 points on a 12-15 effort from the floor that included a pair of three-pointers and a 2-3 effort from the free throw line.  Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) added 15 points with five three-pointer while ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) tallied 12 points. 
 
Diaz and Drayton pulled down eight rebounds apiece as the Giants held a commanding, 46-26 advantage on the boards in the contest.  Perry Belcher (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) led all players with five assists and Monroe handed out four helpers in the win.
 
Miller scored a game-high 33 points for USMMA to go along with eight rebounds while Connor Green finished with nine points for the Mariners, who shot 33.9 percent from the field for the game including a 41.2 percent showing from downtown and an 81 percent effort at the charity stripe. 
 
Keystone opens Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night with a matchup at Neumann University.  Opening tip between the Giants and Knights is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. in Aston, Pennsylvania.
