Aston, Pa. – Neumann University used a big run late in the first half of Tuesday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball opener to pull away for a 105-71 victory over visiting Keystone College. The Knights, who have scored triple-digits in all three of their games on the season, improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play while the Giants fall to 1-2 (0-1 CSAC) on the young season.
The first 15 minutes of Tuesday night's contest was tightly played with the two teams trading the lead 10 times and neither side owning a lead greater than four points. A layup by
John Kirkpatrick (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) with six and a half minutes remaining in the first half gave Keystone a 25-21 lead, but Neumann closed the half with a 22-4 tear to take a 43-29 lead into the halftime break.
James Butler led all players with 10 first-half point while Carl Wallace chipped in with nine points for the Knights, who hit on 39.5 percent of their attempts from the floor in the half including a 4-12effort from long distance and a 9-10 showing at the free throw line.
Devin Williams (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) paced Keystone with seven points in the first half while
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) tallied six points for the Giants. Both players contributed five rebounds apiece as the visitors shot 30.6 percent from the field in the half while going 2-9 from three-point land and 5-8 from the free throw line.
Keystone pulled to within 15 points twice in the first three minutes of the second half, but the Knights opened up a 26-point advantage with 15:21 left in regulation following a 16-4 run. Neumann would lead by as many as 41 points before the Giants outscored the hosts 13-6 over the final 3:35 to round out the final score.
Butler finished with a game-high 23 points and had 10 rebounds to lead six Knights in double-figures. Tyaire Hudson (15), Wallace (14), DeShawn Lowman (12), Kenny Wilson (12), and Tony Parker (10) all reached double-figures for Neumann with Wallace matching Butler for a game-high with 10 rebounds.
The hosts hit on 56.5 percent from the field in the contest after a 77.2 percent showing in the second half. Neumann also went 38.9 percent from three-point range and 64.5 percent from the charity stripe while holding a 50-40 advantage in total rebounds.
Perry Belcher (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) led Keystone with 12 points and two assists, Williams netted nine points, and
Deion Monroe (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston ) and
Bryan Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Rialto) tallied eight points apiece in the loss.
Devin Stricklin (Midland, Tex./Pro Vision Prep) tied with Belcher for the team-lead with two assists while matching Monroe for a game-best with three steals.
Drayton led the Giants on the glass with seven rebounds while Monroe and
Devin Williams (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) corralled five boards apiece.
The Giants finished the evening shooting 35.7 percent from the field, 20 percent from long range, and 62.1 percent from the free throw line.
Keystone will be back in action on Sunday afternoon with a non-conference game at Manhattanville College starting at 3:00 p.m. in Purchase, New York.
