Old Westbury, N.Y. – Playing its fifth game in eight days, Keystone College's women's basketball team suffered a 74-30 setback to The College at Old Westbury in non-conference action on Tuesday night. The Panthers (0-1), who qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season after winning the Skyline Conference championship, won their season opener while the Giants close a grueling, season-opening stretch with a 1-4 record.
Old Westbury scored the first eight points of Tuesday's contest and closed the first period with an 11-1 run to hold a 19-3 advantage after the first 10-minute frame.
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) converted a layup to start the second quarter, but the Panthers netted 20 of the last 21 points in the stanza to hold a 23-point lead at halftime.
Old Westbury tallied the first 20 points of the third quarter before Keystone closed the period with a 9-0 run, but the hosts outscored the Giants 22-15 in the final 10-minute frame to account for the final score line.
Monique Joseph led the Panthers with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Davida Warren added a double-double of her own on 11 points and 11 rebounds. Ruth Vargas added 10 points for Old Westbury, who shot 35 percent from the field, 20 percent from three-point range, and 71.4 percent from the free throw line on the night.
Old Westbury held a commanding, 72-32 advantage on the glass in the win and were plus-two (21-23) in the turnover department.
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) led Keystone with eight points and tied for a game-high with three steals to go along with five rebounds.
Catia Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Bel Air) added seven points while Sugalski finished with six points for the Giants, who connected on 17.3 percent of their attempts from the floor while going 0-11 from beyond the arc and 54.5 percent from the stripe.
Dyjae Williams (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) paced the Giants with seven rebounds and had two assists, tying with Johnson for the team lead.
Emily Hutton (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) and
Brianna Nolen (Union Bridge, Md./Walkersville) picked up a pair of takeaways for the visitors in the loss.
Keystone returns to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon with a non-conference tilt at Penn State Lehigh Valley starting at 1:00 p.m. in Center Valley, Pennsylvania.
