La Plume, Pa. – Trailing 38-30 early in the second half of Wednesday night's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball at Keystone College, Immaculata University embarked on a 27-7 run over an eight-minute span and held off a late push by the host to secure a 76-67 victory in the Gambal Athletic Center. The Mighty Macs lift their record to 2-3 (1-0 CSAC) while the Giants slip to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in league play after suffering the setback in their home opener.
Keystone scored 11 straight points to open up a 22-11 lead with 10:22 remaining in the first half of Wednesday night's affair before Immaculata cut its deficit to 24-22 with five and a half minutes left on the clock. The Giants countered with the next six points and held a 34-28 advantage at halftime.
Perry Belcher (Orlando, Fla./Colonial) paced Keystone with nine points in the first half while
ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, N.Y./Monticello) netted eight points for the Giants, who shot 29.7 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 2-8 from three-point range and 10-16 from the free throw line.
Mike Piekarski and Morgan Bailey tallied seven points apiece to lead the Immaculata in the first stanza. The Mighty Macs connected on 34.5 percent of their attempts from the floor in the half while going 1-9 from beyond the arc and a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe.
With Keystone leading by eight points three minutes into the second half, Immaculata went on an 18-3 burst to build a claim a 48-41 lead with 11:07 left before pushing its lead to 12 points, 57-45, with nine minutes remaining.
The Giants countered with the game's next 12 points, tying the game at 57-57 on a
Khyle Diaz (East Miramar, Fla./Pembroke Pines Charter) three-pointer at the 6:15 mark and the two sides trade buckets over the next three minutes. The Mighty Macs held a 67-64 edge until
Mark Gilliam (Philadelphia, Pa./High School of the Future) scored on a jumper with two minutes remaining to bring Keystone within a point, but Immaculata pulled away with the win by scoring nine of the game's final 10 points.
Roy Ferrrell Jr. scored a game-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds for the Mighty Macs while Piekarski (18) and Jordan Ambrose (15) also finished in double-figures. Immaculata shot 53.1 percent from the field and 80 percent from the line in the second half to finish the night hitting on 44.3 percent of its field goal attempts while going 17.6 percent from downtown and 86.4 percent from the line.
Belcher,
Deion Monroe (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston ), and
Bryan Williams (Los Angeles, Calif./Rialto) all netted 11 points for Keystone while Drayton finished with 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Belcher led all players with four assists while Monroe collected a game-high three steals for the Giants, who held a 44-39 advantage on the glass and were plus-one (18-19) in the turnover category.
The hosts shot 33.8 percent from the floor for the game including a 21.4 percent showing from three-point land while going 66.7 percent from the stripe.
Keystone returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a CSAC tilt at Rosemont College starting at 3:00 p.m.
