Women’s Basketball Defeated by Dolphins in Final Game of 2016

Staten Island builds 25-point lead at halftime in non-conference win

La Plume, Pa. – The College of Staten Island scored eight three-pointers to build a 25-point halftime lead on its way to a 76-56 victory over Keystone College  in non-conference women's basketball action on Sunday afternoon in the Gambal Athletic Center.  The Dolphins improve to 7-2 on the season while the Giants end the semester with a 3-7 record.
 
Staten Island built an 16-9 lead over the first 5:08 of Sunday's contest before Keystone countered with a 7-2 run to pull to with two points at the 2:11 mark of the first quarter.  The Dolphins responded with a 10-2 run to close the period to hold a 28-18 advantage at the end of 10 minutes of play.
 
The visitors opened the second stanza with a 14-2 burst to claim a 42-20 lead four minutes into the period.  Staten Island led by as many as 26 points before holding a 53-28 advantage at the break after forcing Keystone to turn the ball over 21 times in the first half.  
 
Staten Island's Christina Pasaturo led all scorers with 18 points in the first half while Samantha Flecker added 13 points for the Dolphins, who shot 51.7 percent from the field in the first half including an 8-13 showing from three-point range to go along with a 75 percent effort from the free throw line.
 
Dyjae Williams (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) paced Keystone with eight points and four rebounds while Emily Hutton (North Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) and Daynara Elysee (Spring Valley, N.Y./Ramapo) chipped in with six points apiece for the Giants, who connected on 44 percent of their shots from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play.
 
The Dolphins extended their advantage to a game-high 39 points with two and a half minutes remaining in the third quarter, but Keystone battled to the end, outscoring Staten Island 19-6 in the fourth quarter to cut its margin of defeat to 20 points.
 
Pasaturo finished with a game-high 28 points for Staten Island, Flecker added 19 points and seven steals, while Victoria Crea totaled 11 points to go along with team-highs of six rebounds and five steals.  The Dolphins finished the day hitting on 44.8 percent of their attempts from the field while going 40 percent from three-point land and 76.2 percent from the charity stripe.
 
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) scored a team-leading 14 points for Keystone while Williams and Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) tallied eight points apiece.  Williams pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals.  Nina Hodanich (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) dished out three helpers while Garrett also had a pair of steals in the loss.
 
The Giants, who held a 36-34 edge in rebounds for the game, went 40 percent from the floor, 38.5 percent from beyond the arc, and 70 percent from the line.
 
Keystone will return to action on Tuesday, January 3 with a Colonial States Athletic Conference game at Clarks Summit University starting at 6:00 p.m.
