Monroe Nets a Career-High 22 Points in Loss at Immaculata

Giants eliminated from playoff contention after falling to Mighty Macs

Immaculata, Pa. – Immaculata University ended Keystone College's hopes for a berth in the  Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball playoffs with a 77-57 victory over the Giants on Wednesday evening.  The Mighty Macs improve to 9-13 on the season and 8-7 in conference play while the Giants fall to 4-18 overall and 4-11 in the CSAC despite getting a career-high 22 points from Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ).
 
The first 12 and a half minutes were tightly contested as Keystone held its largest lead at four points in the first three minutes and Immacula's biggest advantage standing at five points at the 8:13 mark.  James Cooper (Freehold, NJ/Pius X) went 2-3 from the free throw line with 7:28 remaining in the first half to cut the Mighty Macs' lead to 24-21 before the hosts embarked on a 10-0 run to open up a 34-21 advantage.  The Giants battled back and cut their deficit to 38-32 at halftime as Monroe drained a three-pointer at the buzzer.
 
Roy Ferrell Jr. led Immaculata with 14 points in the first half while Ron Melton pulled down five rebounds for the Mighty Macs, who shot 43.8 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play while going 2-8 from three-point range and 8-11 from the free throw line.
 
Monroe led all scorers with 17 points in the opening stanza for Keystone while ShaShawn Drayton (Monticello, NY/Monticello) chipped in with six points.  Cooper and DeAndre Monroe (Raleigh, NC/Knightdale) tied for the team-lead with four caroms apiece while Monroe and Tyreek Peeples (Philadelphia, PA/Girard College) dished out three assists apiece.  The visitors connected on 41.4 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half including an 5-11 clip from long range while making three of five free throw shots.
 
Immaculata opened the second half with a three-pointer before Peeples hit the front end of a pair of free throws to make it an eight-point game early in the second half.  The Mighty Macs pushed their lead to 12 points before Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston ) converted a three-point play to cut the hosts' advantage to 45-36 with 14:38 left on the clock. 
 
Immaculata countered with the game's next nine points though to build an 18-point lead, 54-36, at the 13:05 mark and would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way as Keystone was unable to come any closer than 11 points down the stretch.
 
Ferrell Jr. finished with 22 points to lead Immaculata while Matt Simon tallied 12 points.  Mike Sturdivant Jr. contributed 11 points while Mike Piekarski pulled in a game-high nine rebounds for the Mighty Macs, who held a 42-32 advantage on the glass and were plus-six (7-13) in turnovers.  The hosts finished the evening hitting on 45 percent of their field goal attempts including a 31.3 percent showing from long distance and an 81.8 percent effort at the charity stripe.
 
Deion Monroe (Kingston, NY/Kingston )'s career-best 22 points came on an 8-17 night shooting from the field that including four made three-pointers and two converted free throws.  Devin Williams (Monticello, NY/Monticello) added 17 points to go along with a game-high four blocked shots.  DeAndre Monroe (Raleigh, NC/Knightdale) was the Giants leading rebounder with six boards to go along with four assists while Peeples finished with a game-best five helpers.  The visitors ended the night converting on 38.3 percent of their shots from the field while going 25 percent from three-point land and 66.7 percent from the line.
 
Keystone returns to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon with a CSAC contest against Neumann University starting at 1:00 p.m. in the Gambal Athletic Center in La Plume.
