Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, NY/Paramus Catholic) scored a game-high 20 points, but it wasn't enough for Keystone College as the Giants dropped an 81-35 decision to Gwynedd Mercy University in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday as part of the league's #Play4JaylenAndJP Day. The Griffins lift their record to 17-4 on the season and 11-1 in conference play while the Giants fall to 7-13 on the year including a 4-8 mark in the CSAC.
Daynara Elysee (Spring Valley, NY/Ramapo) hit the front end of a pair of free throws to open up the scoring for Keystone on Saturday afternoon, but Gwynedd Mercy scored the final 19 points of the first period to hold an 18-point advantage at the first intermission. The Griffins opened the second frame with a field goal before the Giants used a quick, 5-0 run to pull to within 15 points at 21-6 at the 6:50 mark on a
Maddy Moro (Danville, PA/Danville Area) layup. The visitors would lead by as many as 23 points before taking a 32-11 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Charlotte Kucowski led Gwynedd Mercy with nine points while Alison Szyszko netted six points in the opening 20 minutes of play to lead the Griffins, who shot 46.4 percent from the field in the first two periods including a 4-11 clip from three-point range and a 2-5 showing at the free throw line.
Hall paced Keystone with six points while Moro led all players with six caroms in the first two stanzas for the Giants, who connected on just 16.7 percent of their field goal attempts while going 1-9 from long distance and 2-3 from the charity stripe.
Gwynedd Mercy netted the first 19 points of the third period and extended their lead to 68-17 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Bryce Garrett (Philadelphia, PA/John Bartram) and
April Acosta (Bronx, NY/Evander Childs) netted back-to-back field goals to start the fourth quarter for Keystone and the Giants would go on to outscore Gwynedd Mercy 18-13 in the final period as the hosts continued to battle until the end of the game.
Nicole Dombrowski paced Gwynedd Mercy with 15 points and finished a rebound short of a double-double with a game-high nine caroms. Kucowksi added 13 points while Szyszko netted 12 points for the Griffins, who shot 45.7 percent from the floor, 31.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 58.8 percent from the line.
Hall added five points to her game-high 20 points for Keystone while
Samantha Donahue (Taylor, PA/Riverside) and
Catia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Bel Air) chipped in with four points apiece.
Dyjae Williams (Newark, NJ/Bloomfield Tech) led the Giants with eight points while Moro hauled in seven boards. Elysee dished out a pair of assists while Moro and Acosta recorded three steals each for the hosts, who shot 18.4 percent from the field on the afternoon while going 1-13 from downtown but were solid from the stripe, connecting on 76.2 percent of their free throw shots.
Keystone will travel to Centenary College on Monday night for a CSAC contest starting at 7:00 p.m. in Hackettstown, New Jersey. The game between the Giants and Cyclones is a make-up of the January 23 contest that was postponed by Winter Storm Jonas.
