Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Keystone College rebounded from a tough, 5-4 loss to Spalding University on Tuesday morning to score a convincing, 9-0, five-inning win over Morrisville State College in game two of Tuesday's softball action at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) tossed a two-hitter in the game two win for the Giants, who move to 2-2 on the season heading into a day off during their spring break trip.
Game 1 vs. SpaldingIn Tuesday's opener against Spalding (2-3), the Golden Eagles scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning to rally for the one-run victory over the Giants.
Keystone took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, PA/Pittston Area) came home following a Spalding error on a ball of the bat of
Kimberly Rivera (New York, NY/South Bronx Campus). The Golden Eagles tied the score in their first at-bats on an RBI double. The Giants went back in front in the visitor's third on an RBI groundout by Scialpi, the Spalding again answered back in their half of the inning with an RBI single to make the game 2-2.
Rivera scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning and
Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) did the same an inning later to give the Giants a 4-2 edge. Spalding knotted the game in the home fifth by taking advantage of a Keystone error that allowed two runs to score before getting the eventual game-winning run on an RBI groundout later in the inning. The Giants were retired in order in their final two at-bats as the Golden Eagles held on for the victory.
Robyn Schoen picked up the win after allowing one run on two hits in three innings of relief work for Spalding starter Kaylin Rucker, who yielded three runs on three hits in the first four innings. Samantha Klein went 3-3 with two RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles offensively.
Katie Thompson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) went 2-3 with two triples while Scialpi, Long, and
Emily Faulkner (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing Valley) accounted for Keystone's other three hits as the Giants were doubled up in hits in the loss, 10-5.
Faulkner pitched six strong innings in the circle for the Giants, allowing just two unearned runs while striking out four batters and walking none in the complete game loss.
Game 2 vs. Morrisville StateIn the nightcap against Morrisville State (1-3), Hughes was nearly unhittable in the circle, allowing just a pair of singles in the fourth inning while striking out five batters in the complete game victory.
Keystone jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Rivera hit a two-run double and came around to score on an RBI single by
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, PA/Lake-Lehman), who later scored the Giants' fourth run on a error off a ball put into play by
Shannon Dermont (Scranton, PA/West Scranton).
The Giants pushed their lead to 6-0 on a two-run Rivera base hit before tacking on three runs in the fifth inning.
Kaylee Hartman (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) hit and RBI single, Long had an RBI triple, and Thompson added an RBI single before Hughes retired the side in order in the bottom half of the inning to close out the mercy-rule victory.
Thompson went 3-3 with two runs scored while Rivera added a pair of hits a game-high four RBIs in the win over the Mustangs.
Brittany Keator took the loss for Morrisville State after allowing six runs on six hits in two innings of work before turning the ball over to Allison McGuire, who surrendered three runs on four hits in the final three innings.
Keystone will close out the South Carolina portion of their spring break trip with a pair of games on Thursday as the Giants will take on Principia College at 9:30 a.m. before squaring off against Albertus Magnus College at 11:30 a.m. in Myrtle Beach.
