Dover, Del. - Keystone College suffered a pair of losses at Wesley College on Saturday afternoon in the final leg of the Giants' annual spring break trip. The Wolverines leveled their overall record at 7-7 after winning Saturday's opener 10-2 in five innings before taking the second game 9-6 with a walk-off home run while dropping the Giants to 3-5 on the young season.
Game 1In Saturday's opener, Wesley scored nine runs in the first two innings and was able to secure the 10-2 win in five innings despite a late push from the Giants.
The Wolverines got a three-run home run to open the scoring followed by an RBI double to claim a 4-0 inning after one inning of play. The hosts followed up the next inning with five runs on four hits including another three-run home run to break open the game, 9-0.
Wesley plated their 10
th run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single before Keystone broke up the shutout bid in the top of the fourth inning after getting RBI doubles from
Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) and
Lindsey Bucklaw (Carbondale, PA/Carbondale Area).
The Wolverines, who held an 11-4 advantage in hits in the opener, were paced by Ashley Royer's three hits while Breanna Hartman, Nina Marcano, and Kayla Fromal adding two hits. Marcano drove in a game-high four runs while Fromal had three RBIs for Wesley.
Lindsay Siok picked up the win after allowing one hit and striking out two in three scoreless innings while Lily Engel yielded two runs on three hits in the final two innings.
Emily Faulkner (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing Valley) suffered the loss in the circle for the Giants after allowing 10 runs - five of which were unearned - on 11 hits while picking up three strikeouts while going the distance for the visitors.
Breelyn Johnson-Fite (Bogota, NJ/Bergen County Technical) accounted for two of Keystone's four hits in the loss while also picking up a stolen base.
Game 2The second game of Saturday's twin bill was a tightly contested affair, with Wesley prevailing on a walk-off, three-run home run off the bat of Marcano in the bottom of the seventh as the Wolverines overcame a 6-5 deficit in their last at-bats to complete the sweep.
The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a solo home run, but Keystone went ahead 2-1 in the visitor's fourth when
Katie Thompson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) ripped a two-run double to centerfield. Wesley countered with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame to go back to the point, 3-2.
The Giants forged back in front in the top of the sixth inning as
Kaylee Hartman (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) hit an RBI double before
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, PA/Lake-Lehman) scored the go-ahead run following an error on a ball hit by
Kimberly Rivera (New York, NY/South Bronx Campus), but Wesley countered again in the bottom of the inning by getting a two-run double to claim a 5-4 edge.
Bucklaw came home with the tying run when Stacey hit into a fielder's choice before
Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, PA/Tunkhannock) scored on an RBI base hit by Thompson to give the visitors a 6-5 edge. Down to their last out, the Wolverines tied the game on a wild pitch before Marcano ended the game with a three-run home run over the left field fence to give Wesley the comeback victory.
Marcano, Royer, and Fromal had two hits apiece with Marcano and Royer leading the way with three RBIs each.
Sydney Botsch allowed six runs on 11 hits to go along with four strikeouts in the first 6.2 innings in the circle for Wesley while Siok picked up the win after allowing one hit and striking out the final batter in the Keystone seventh.
Thompson went 3-4 at the plate for the Giants while Long, Fitch, Hartman, and Johnson-Fite, had two hits apiece for the visitors, who held a 12-8 advantage in hits in the game two setback.
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) tossed 6.2 innings in the circle for Keystone, surrendering seven earned runs on eight hits to go along with four K's in the loss.
Up NextKeystone will play their home opener on Wednesday afternoon against Wilkes University at Edmunds Field. First pitch against the Colonels is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in La Plume.
