La Plume, Pa. – Keystone College cruised to a Colonial State Athletic Conference sweep of Rosemont College on Sunday, outscoring the Ravens 18-2 in a pair of run rule victories in a makeup twin bill from the 4
th Annual Bill Howerton Strikeout Cancer Weekend. The Giants improve to 11-17 this spring and 6-8 in conference play after defeating Rosemont 8-0 in six innings in Sunday's opener and 10-2 in five innings in the nightcap.
Game 1 Keystone took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning of Sunday's first game.
Emily Long (Shamokin, PA/Our Lady of Lourdes Regional) led off the inning with a double down the right field line and came around to score on a passed ball to give the Giants the first run of the contest.
The hosts then scored four runs on four hits in the home fourth to build a 5-0 lead.
Ryleigh Fitch (Springville, PA/Tunkhannock) led off the inning with a double and was pinch-run for by
Breelyn Johnson-Fite (Bogota, NJ/Bergen County Technical), who used aggressive base-running to score from second on a bunt single by
Samantha Monetti (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North). Long then ripped a two-run double off the left field wall before scoring Keystone's fifth run on a passed ball.
The Giants extended their advantage to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Johnson-Fite tripled to right field before scoring on a passed ball before closing out the run-rule victory with a pair of unearned runs in the home sixth.
Katie Thompson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) raced around to score from first on a Rosemont fielding error on a ball hit by Long, who then scored the game-ending run after another error by the Ravens on a popup hit by
Lindsey Bucklaw (Carbondale, PA/Carbondale Area).
Alyssa Hughes (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) picked up the win for Keystone, pitching a complete game shutout with five strikeouts and just four hits against.
Long went 3-4 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Giants in the opener while Johnson-Fite scored a pair of runs.
Maggie Miller started in the circle for Rosemont and allowed two hits in a pair of scoreless innings before handing the ball off to Charlie Fillmore, who was charged with the loss after yielding eight runs – only three of which were earned – on seven hits to go along with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
The Ravens got hits from four different players in the game one loss.
Game 2 Keystone took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Sunday's nightcap by taking advantage of two hits and three errors by the Ravens. Thompson scored the first run of the game on a throw to first when Long struck out before
Sarah Stacey (Shickshinny, PA/Lake-Lehman) scored on an RBI groundout by
Antonette Scialpi (Hughestown, PA/Pittston Area).
Shannon Dermont (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) then laced an RBI double to left field before coming home on an error, as did Johnson-Fite to give the Giants the five-run advantage.
Keystone pushed its lead to 7-0 in the home second when Dermont connected on a two-run single to center that plated Scialpi and Bucklaw before Rosemont scored its first two runs of the game in the top of the third inning to cut the Giants' lead to 7-2.
Scialpi drove in Long with a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the host's advantage to 8-2.
Nicole Shay (Thompson, PA/Susquehanna Community) led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double down the left field line and scored on a double from Johnson-Fite, who then scored the game-ending run on an RBI base hit from
Kimberly Rivera (New York, NY/South Bronx Campus).
Emily Faulkner (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing Valley) tossed a complete game to pick up the win with strikeouts and two runs against on six hits.
Dermont and Rivera led the Giants with two hits apiece while Dermont drove in a game-high three runs.
Bailey Shulte suffered the loss after being charged with five runs – three of which were earned – on two hits while striking out one batter in the first inning. Fillmore was charged with five runs on seven hits to go along with four strikeouts in the final three innings for Rosemont, who got a pair of hits from Dani Lelie.
Up Next Keystone returns to the diamond on Tuesday with a CSAC doubleheader at local rival Summit University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Clarks Summit.
