La Plume, Pa. – Rosemont College spoiled Keystone College's playoffs aspirations with a 16-14 victory over the Giants in a Colonial States Athletic Conference women's lacrosse game on Saturday evening. The Ravens finish the spring with a 3-12 overall record including a 2-7 mark in conference play while Keystone ends a solid second season with a 4-7 (3-6 CSAC) record.
Losses by Gwynedd Mercy University and Centenary College earlier in the day opened the door for the Giants to qualify for the CSAC playoffs, but it was not to be as the Ravens outscored the Giants by a goal in both halves giving the Griffins and Cyclones the fifth and sixth spots in the conference tournament, respectively.
Rosemont scored the first three goals of Saturday's contest before
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) pulled Keystone to within a goal with back-to-back tallies midway through the first half. The Ravens sandwiched a pair of goals around Hawkins's third tally of the day to hold a 6-3 advantage with 8:25 remaining in the opening stanza, but Hawkins and
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, PA/Wellsboro Area) scored the final two goals of the period to cut the Giants' deficit to 6-5 at halftime.
Hawkins, Zuchowski, and
Nina Hodanich (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) scored in the first 3:15 of the second half to give Keystone an 8-6 lead, but Rosemont countered with a pair of goals to knot the game up at eight-apiece. Zuchowski completed her hat trick off an
Aileen Yaeger (Medford, NY/Patchogue-Medford) assist at the 22:39 mark to briefly put the Giants back in front, but the Ravens answered with a five-goal run to build a 13-9 lead with 14:11 left in regulation.
Keystone came back with the game's next three goals as
Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, NY/Paramus Catholic) got into the scoring act before Hawkins netted two more with the sophomore's 50
th goal of the season with 7:18 remaining cutting Keystone's deficit to 13-12. The visitors answered with the game's next two goals to hold a 15-12 edge with 3:43 remaining before holding on for the two-goal victory.
Jennifer South scored nine goals and assisted on another to lead Rosemont's attack while Victoria Kasper tallied four goals for the Ravens, who got 15 saves from winning goalie Elizabeth Russell.
Hawkins tied for a game-high with 10 points on eight goals and two helpers to lead Keystone while Zuchowski added four goals. Yaeger added three assists for the Giants, who received seven saves from
Katelyn Coon (Selden, NY/St. John the Baptist ).
Hawkins and
Shatia Silas (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) had six draw controls apiece while
Emily Hutton (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony Union) and
Kayla Bain (Lancaster, PA/J.P. McCaskey) tied for the team-lead with five groundballs apiece. Hodanich added five caused turnovers while Bain forced three giveaways by the Ravens.
Both teams attempted 36 shots on the night and also tied with 16 draw controls apiece. Keystone held a 29-23 edge in shots on goal while holding a 37-31 advantage in groundballs.
Saturday's contest marked the final game in a Keystone uniform for seniors Coon, Yaeger,
Amber Crews (Plainfield, NJ/Central Jersey College Prep ), and
Valeria Lemus (Sag Harbor, NY/Pierson).
