DeSales Uses Big First Half to Knock Off Giants

Heintz makes nine saves in net for Keystone

Center Valley, Pa. – DeSales University scored five first half and tacked on a pair in the second stanza to defeat visiting Keystone College 7-0 in the season-opening, non-conference women's soccer game for both teams on Thursday afternoon.  Angelica Bertola netted four goals to lead the Bulldogs (1-0) past the Giants (0-1), who got nine saves from goalkeeper Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington).

DeSales opened the scoring in the 16th minute of Thursday's season opener when Bertola scored on a breakaway before doubling the Bulldog's lead 2:25 later with a shot just inside the far post.

Danni Engwall extended the host's advantage to 3-0 in the 27th minute by finding the back of the net after taking a pass from Jess Wetherhold before Erin Crystal made it a four-goal game in the 41st minute with a shot into the upper-90.  Amanda Foley gave DeSales a five-goal cushion with just 1:21 remaining in the first half by knocking home a centering pass from Catherine Cirigliano.

Bertola netted her third and fourth goals of the afternoon in the first 20 minutes of the second half to close out the scoring for the Bulldogs, who outshot Keystone by a 35-1 margin while holding an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Engwall added a goal and an assist while Wetherhold and Claire Bassetti were credited with two assists apiece for DeSales, who had three goalkeepers combine for the shutout.

Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View) accounted Keystone's lone shot attempt on the day, a late second half effort that went high of the crossbar.

The Giants will return to action on Wednesday when they play their home opener against Penn State Brandywine.  Opening kickoff of the non-conference affair is slated for 4:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
