Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View),
Rebecca Lewis (Abingdon, Md./Aberdeen), and
Shauna Menzella (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) scored a goal apiece to lead Keystone College to a 3-1 victory over Penn State Brandywine in the Giants' women's soccer home opener on Wednesday afternoon.
Keystone (1-1) opened the scoring the 15
th minute of Wednesday's contest when Richner took a thru-ball on the left side of the penalty area from
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) and slotted home a shot to the far post for the first goal of her collegiate career, giving the Giants the early, 1-0 edge.
Lewis doubled the hosts lead in the 21
st minute of play, lacing a shot over Brandywine goalkeeper Emily Bush to the far post off of a set piece.
Nina Carbonaro (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) picked up an assist on the tally that gave Keystone a 2-0 edge.
The Giants held the two-goal advantage at halftime while outshooting the Nittany Lions 16-3 overall while holding a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
Both teams had several good chances at the game's all-important third goal in the second half, but Bush and Keystone goalkeeper
Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington) came up with some big saves before the Giants put the game out of reach in the 77
th minute on a nice passing play.
Kristy Hansen (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) played a thru-ball to the right side of the penalty area that
Jayleen Galeno (Passaic, N.J./Scranton) slotted across the face of goal for a one-time finish by Menzella to push Keystone's lead to 3-0.
Brandywine (1-1) broke up Heintz's bid for her first shutout of the season with just 11.5 seconds left on the clock as Brianna Banks scored from 10 yards out on a counterattack for the visitors with Arianna Segich and Brooke Muhlbaier picked up assists on the tally.
Heintz made nine saves to pick up her first win in goal on the season while Bush finished with 10 stops for the Nittany Lions, who also had a goal saved off the line by a defender off a header by
Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, N.Y./Stamford Central) in the second half.
For the game, Keystone held a 33-12 advantage in shots, a 14-10 edge in shots on goal, and had 10 corner kick chances to four for the Nittany Lions.
The Giants will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a non-conference game at Mount Aloysius College. Opening kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. in Cresson, Pennsylvania.
