La Plume, Pa. – Four different players scored goals to lead Keystone College to a 4-2 victory over visiting Alfred State College in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday evening. The Giants level their record at 2-2 on the season while the Pioneers fall to 3-2 overall.
Keystone took the lead just 3:47 into Wednesday night's contest.
Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) placed a shot on goal that was saved off the line by an Alfred State defender, but
Gina Carbonaro (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) was there to knock home the rebound to give the Giants the early, 1-0 edge.
Shauna Menzella (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) doubled the Giants' advantage in the 37
th minute by finishing off a great build-up by the hosts.
Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View) started the play by slotting a ball out wide to
Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, N.Y./Stamford Central), who served a left-footed cross to Menzella, who one-touched the ball into the side-netting to give Keystone the 2-0 lead.
The Giants held the two-goal lead at halftime along with a 9-7 advantage in shots. Both teams place five efforts on target with Keystone goalkeeper
Rebekah Shepherd (South Canaan, Pa./Western Wayne) stopping all five shots by the Pioneers to keep the visitors off the board.
Alfred State got on the board in the 55
th minute Michayla Salatel beat Shepherd to the near post from close range after taking a short thru-ball in the box from Melissa Mineti. The Pioneers leveled the game at 2-2 just 3:22 later when Stormi Kruger knocked home a loose ball in the six-yard box.
Keystone went back on top, 3-2, in the 63
rd minute of the game. The Giants were awarded a penalty kick after the Pioneers were whistled for a foul in their box. Ehrhart stepped up to the spot and made no mistake in burying her first goal of the season.
Nina Carbonaro (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) capped the scoring with a pretty goal in the 81
st minute, hitting a one-time volley off of a corner kick served in by
Rebecca Lewis (Abingdon, Md./Aberdeen). The sophomore's first tally of the season gave the hosts a 4-2 cushion.
Shepherd finished with eight saves to earn her first collegiate victory for Keystone while Allison Danielak made six stops for Alfred State.
Both teams were credited with 18 shots apiece in the game with the Giants holding a 12-11 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers held a narrow, 8-7 advantage in corner kicks in the loss.
Keystone opens Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday at home against Immaculata University. Opening kickoff between the Giants and Mighty Macs is set for 4:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
