La Plume, Pa. Ramapo College built a two-goal lead early in the second half of Friday afternoon's season-opening field hockey game and withstood a late push by Keystone College to escape with a 2-1 win over the Giants at Keystone's turf field.
Ramapo (1-0) applied the early pressure, but
Megan Novak (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) made four saves in the first 12 minutes of the game to keep scoreless. The Roadrunners finally solved Novak in the 16
th minute of play though as Gianna Mouskourie took a pass from Lauren Berry, turned, and found the back of the cage from close range to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Keystone (0-1) looked to respond the remainder of the half, but efforts by
Jayde Newman (Fremantle, Australia/Santa Maria College) and
Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) were both turned aside by Ramapo netminder Emily Wisneski to preserve the Roadrunners heading into halftime.
Ramapo doubled its lead seven and a half minutes into the second half when Nicole Healy converted a penalty stroke.
Keystone cut its deficit to 2-1 with 12:41 remaining in regulation by making good on a fast break opportunity as
Briana Sotiropoulos (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) went in one-on-one with Wisneski after taking a feed from Croasdale and scored to get the Giants on the board.
Croasdale nearly leveled the game with just under eight minutes left in regulation, but Ramapo got a key defensive save from Stacey Faria to preserve the victory for the Roadrunners.
Wisneski finished with four saves to pick up the win in Ramapo's cage.
Novak finished with four saves in 35 minutes of action before giving way to
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham), who turned aside three shots in the second half for Keystone.
Amy Llewellyn (Plains, Pa./Coughlin) also added a defensive save in her collegiate debut for the Giants.
Keystone will be right back in action tomorrow afternoon with a non-conference matchup at the University of Scranton starting at 1:00 p.m.
