Three First Half Goals Carry #16 Scranton Past Keystone

Hawkins and Novak make five saves apiece for Giants

Scranton, Pa. – The University of Scranton, currently ranked #16 in the country, scored three first half goals and held visiting Keystone College without a shot in a 3-0 victory in non-conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.  The Royals level their record at 1-1 on the season with the shutout win while the Giants fall to 0-2 on the year.

Scranton took a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into Saturday's contest when Meredith Campbell opened up the scoring after collecting a rebound and firing home a shot with Cyan Scarduzio picking up an assist on the tally.

The Royals upped their lead to two goals with 7:19 remaining in the first half when Campbell deflected home a ball played in from the right wing by Katherine McVeigh before taking a 3-0 advantage into halftime after Elizabeth Tolley scored on a scramble in front of Keystone's cage at the 3:45 mark.

After outshooting the Giants 13-0 in the first half, Scranton took all 12 shots in the second half, but Keystone's defense held strong and Megan Novak (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) made five saves as the visitor's held the Royals scoreless in the second half.

In addition to hold a 25-0 advantage in shots, the Royals also generated 19 penalty corner chances to just one for the Giants.

Tate Ackerman and Claire McAllister both played a half in the host's cage and combined for the shutout without being forced to make a save.

Novak finished with five saves for Keystone in 42:19 of action after replacing Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham), who also made five stops in the first 27:41 of the game.

Keystone returns to action on Wednesday night when it hosts Wilkes University in a non-conference tilt starting at 7:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
