Atlanta, Ga. – Keystone College's volleyball team suffered a pair of losses on Friday as the Giants opened the 2016 season at the Stormy Petrel Challenge hosted by Oglethorpe University. Transylvania University defeated the Giants (0-2) in three sets before Belhaven University rallied for a four-set win in Keystone's second contest of the day.
Match 1 vs. Transylvania
In Friday's opening match versus Transylvania (1-0), the Pioneers won the first set 25-17 before taking a 2-0 advantage with a 25-13 decision in game two. Transylvania then closed out the three-set victory with a 25-21 win in the third frame.
Jordan Horne powered the Pioneers with 15 kills, Taryn Glass had six kills, and Shelby Catlett notched four kills in the win. Hannah Talkers led all players with 21 assists while Marissa Coutinho (18) and Hadley Trenaman (12) picked up double-figure digs for Transylvania, who posted a .173 hitting percentage for the match.
Hannah Zuchowski (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) paced Keystone with six kills to go along with eight digs while
Kristen Larkin (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) put down four kills.
Shannon Monahan (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold) contributed three kills in her collegiate debut while
Sydney Binkley (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) dished out a team-best 11 assists.
Pamela Heitman (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) totaled 14 digs to lead the Giants while
Victoria Homfeld (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) served up a team-high three aces to go along with seven digs in the loss to the Pioneers.
Match 2 vs. Belhaven
In Friday's second match against Belhaven (1-1), Keystone claimed a tight first game, 25-23, before the Blazers leveled the contest with a 25-21 victory in the second set. Belhaven went ahead with a 25-22 decision in game three before winning the match with a narrow, 25-23 triumph in the fourth set.
Blakleigh Smith led the Blazers with a match-high 20 kills, Hope Tourney had 11 kills, and Lexi Brantley added 10 kills. Kelly Aholt handed out a match-best 41 assists while Emily Davis picked up 21 digs for Belhaven.
Zuchowski recorded a double-double on 12 kills and 14 digs while Larkin collected 10 kills.
Amanda Hardy (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) added four kills, Homfeld tied for a match-high with four aces, and
Malley Bowen (Owego, N.Y./Tioga Central) paced the Giants with 30 assists.
Heitman picked up a team-leading 23 digs while
Maddie Roat (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) tallied 15 digs and six kills for Keystone in the nightcap.

Keystone will return to court on Saturday with a pair of matches to close out the tournament. The Giants will take on host Oglethorpe at 12:00 p.m. before meeting Piedmont College at 6:00 p.m.
