Giants Settle for 2-2 Tie After Rally by Falcons

Sugalski and Cortes score for Keystone in draw at Cedar Crest

La Plume, Pa. – Cedar Crest College rallied from a two-goal deficit in the first half of Tuesday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference women's soccer against Keystone College as the two teams played to a 2-2 tie after 110 minutes of action.  The Giants move to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play while the Falcons see their record shift to 4-3-1 on the fall and 0-1-1 in the CSAC.

Keystone opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Brittany Sugalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) found the back of the net with an unassisted tally.  The senior's goal was her first of the season.

The Giants doubled their lead just over five minutes later when Nisa Cortes (Schenectady, N.Y./Schenectady) netted her second goal of the fall.  The sophomore gave the visitors a two-goal advantage with Hannah Richner (Nicholson, Pa./Mountain View) and Cassie Ehrhart (Stamford, N.Y./Stamford Central) picking up assists on the goal in the 29th minute.  Richner's helper was her third of the fall while Ehrhart's was her team-leading fourth of the season.

Cedar Crest got on the board in the 31st minute when Kari Vanderslice found the back of the net off a Kassandra Miller helper.

The Falcons then knotted the game at two-apiece just five minutes later when Kassandra Miller headed in a corner kick from Allison Rittle in the 36th minute.

Neither team was able to find the go-ahead goal in the second half with Cedar Crest holding a slim, 8-7 edge in shots in the second 45 minutes of play.

Offensive chances were limited in the two ten-minute periods of extra time, with both teams attempted two shots apiece, but neither side was able to break through with the game-winner.

Sarah Heintz (Glenside, Pa./Abington) made five saves in the first half for Keystone while Rebekah Shepherd (South Canaan, Pa./Western Wayne) played the final 75 minutes in net and also made five stops for the Giants, who played their first overtime game of the season.

Shelby Szoke made one save in the first 33:31 in goal for the hosts while Cara Montanye turned aside seven Keystone shots in the final 86:29 for Cedar Crest.

The Falcons held a 19-15 advantage in shots for the game including a 12-10 edge in shots on goal while both teams generated six corner kick chances apiece in the draw.

Keystone will visit local rival Clarks Summit University on Saturday for a CSAC contest starting at 1:00 p.m.
