Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – King's College scored three goals in the first seven and a half minutes of Wednesday night's non-conference field hockey game against Keystone College its way to a 4-1 victory. The Monarchs boost their record to 7-3 on the year with the win while the Giants fall to 3-4 after having a three-game winning streak snapped.
King's opened the scoring just 1:22 into Wednesday contest when Selina Malacari knocked in a loose ball in front of Keystone's cage to give the hosts the early lead. The goal by the Monarchs, which was set up by Brianna DiMaggio, snapped the Giants' shutout streak at 274:01 as Keystone posted shutouts in each of its last three games.
Caitlin Wood doubled the lead for King's at the 5:59 mark, firing home a shot from the front of the goal after pass into the circle from the left side off the stick of DiMaggio. Kelsey Gabriele pushed the Monarchs' advantage to 3-0 just over two and a half minutes later when by scoring off an assist from Sarah Zbierski on a penalty corner.
The hosts enjoyed the three-goal lead at halftime while holding a 6-2 advantage in shots over the opening 35 minutes of play including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
Wood tallied her second goal of the night 7:20 into the second half off a setup from Gabriele to stretch the King's lead to four goals.
Rebecca Dempster (Boonton, N.J./Boonton) got Keystone on the board in the 54
th minute of play with her first goal of the season. The junior took a feed from
Breanna Paulson (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) from the left wing on a corner and deposited into the Monarchs' cage to break up the shutout bid by the hosts. Pauslon's assist was her second of the fall.
Paige Tedick went the distance in net for King's, picking up the win by making two saves on the evening.
Megan Novak (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) suffered the loss for the Giants despite making four stops in 33:39 of action while
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham) made a pair of saves in 36:21 in Keystone's goal.
King's held a 19-4 advantage in shots for the game and 16 penalty corner chances to five for the Giants.
Keystone will host Neumann University on Saturday afternoon in an important Colonial States Athletic Conference contest starting at 1:00 p.m. on the turf field in La Plume.
