La Plume, Pa. – Wilkes University scored a pair of goals in the opening 7:21 of Wednesday night's non-conference field hockey game at Keystone College on their way to a 2-0 victory, their first win of the season. The Colonels boost their record to 1-2 on the year while the Giants remain winless in three contests.
Wilkes took a 1-0 lead just 5:17 into Wednesday night's came when Haley Gayoski deflected home a shot by Marissa Surdy from the top off the circle on a penalty corner. The Colonels doubled their lead just over two minutes later when Taylor Ryan scored an unassisted rebound by punching home a rebound.
The visitors held the two-goal advantage at the halftime break after outshooting Keystone by a 9-2 margin in the opening 35 minutes of play.
Megan Novak (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) made one save before being replaced in the Giants' cage by
Emily Hawkins (Glenside, PA/Cheltenham), who stopped all four shots on target in the remainder of the half to keep the hosts within two goals.
Both teams had chances in the second half, with Keystone having the better opportunities of the half on penalty corners.
Shelby Croasdale (Nicholson, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) ripped a shot just off the outside of the cage on a end- chance midway through the frame before
Briana Sotiropoulos (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) was denied by a diving save by Wilkes goalie Dallas Kendra.
Kendra finished the night with four saves to record the shutout for Wilkes, who finished the game with a 15-9 advantage in shots including an 11-4 edge in shots on goal. The Colonels also earned nine penalty corners to three for the Giants.
Hawkins ended the night with a game-high eight saves for Keystone. Croasdale,
Rebecca Dempster (Boonton, N.J./Boonton), and
Alex Smith (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Coughlin) attempted two shots apiece in the setback for the hosts.
Keystone returns to the field on Saturday with a non-conference tilt at Hood College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. in Frederick, Maryland.
